First ‘Knives Out 2’ Trailer Reignites the Good Old-Fashioned Murder Mystery

Daniel Craig’s somewhat questionable Southern drawl is back on the small screen, with Netflix releasing the first official trailer for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The first-look teaser shows Craig’s iconic detective Benoit Blanc on the case once again, joined by a seemingly endless buffet of bullish Hollywood talent, all caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time. The long-awaited sequel to the 2019 smash hit thriller, Knives Out 2 is the first of two new film instalments in the franchise and will premiere on Netflix on December 23.

The first Knives Out 2 trailer sees Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc heading overseas and into a starkly different setting than we’ve seen him before. Taking to the Mediterranean on an exotic private island owned by tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton), Blanc looks certain for some rest and respite. However, things, as they have a habit of doing, suddenly go awry when one of the attendees winds up dead. Cue the infamous and world-renowned detective assuming the case, not to mention assuming everyone’s guilt.

Interestingly, the first Glass Onion trailer gives fans a look at some of the supporting cast and characters, providing some interesting backstories that differ greatly from the original film’s family-focused scope. Among the suspects, we see a YouTube sensation, a fashion mogul, and a senate hopeful all under the microscope as Blanc attempts to “peel back the layers of intrigue”. From there, the trailer treats fans to a series of shots displaying various puzzles set to Blanc’s narration, which sets an eerie tone. Quickly, things turn dark when a sinister shot of an ornate gun flash across the screen, signalling murder is afoot.

The latest announcement comes just weeks after Netflix dropped a host of juicy details about the new film, with director and creator Rian Johnson taking fans behind the scenes of the upcoming mystery. Speaking at the streaming service’s TUDUM event, Johnson revealed that Glass Onion will dive much deeper into the Benoit Blanc character than the previous film, which makes sense. Netflix reportedly dropped a whopping USD$100 million on Daniel Craig to have him reprise the role of the charming Southern detective for two more films, which made him one of Hollywood’s best-paid actors.

“In the first one, because of the way it was structured, Marta, Ana de Armas’ character, was very much the protagonist. In a big way, Blanc was the threat,” Johnson explained. “He was almost the antagonist in terms of just the story structure, because you were worried, even as they got closer, that he was going to catch her and he was going to have to turn her over at the end. So Blanc was always outside of the sphere of our protagonist and was a little bit more of an enigma in the first movie. Whereas, in this one, Blanc gets an invitation to come to this murder mystery on this island. We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes.”

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery also boasts a stellar cast of collaborators and actors, led by a few famous faces. Joining Craig for the new instalment of the run-around murder mystery romp will be Moon Knight‘s Ethan Hawke, Fight Club‘s Edward Norton, Jessica Henwick from the latest Matrix flick, Kathryn Hahn from WandaVision, along with Dune star Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Stranger Things‘ Madelyn Cline, Janelle Monáe and Leslie Odom Jr.

Fans will remember the original Knives Out had a triumphant theatre premiere when it was released in 2019, however, this time around it will be a slightly different setting. The first film was distributed by Lionsgate, however, streaming giant Netflix secured the rights to two new sequels last year. As a result, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will release on Netflix on 23 December 2022. You can watch the first official trailer above.
