Squid Game Season 2

Netflix Confirms ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 with a Terrifying New Character

We may not be in green light territory, but Squid Game has announced it’s officially back for round two. The first season captivated the world, reaching a record-breaking 111 million fans according to streaming platform Netflix, and won three of the four awards it was up for at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. While we don’t have exact details on the Korean thriller’s second season, hints about the plot and its characters have been unveiled to the public.

Series creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, confirmed the news via a statement from the streamer, teasing the return of Gi-hun and the Front Man. On the villainous side, he revealed the man in the suit “might be back”, and Young-hee – the terrifying doll from season one – bizarrely has a new murderous boyfriend riding alongside her.

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular series ever,” Hwang shared in the letter. “Join us once more for a whole new round.”

There’s been massive hype around the second season for some time, yet this is the first official confirmation from Hwang and the streamer. Talking with IndieWire, the writer recently said he left clues in the first season’s storyline:” just in case there is another season, these things could be loose knots.” He added: “I only currently have a broad storyline. I’m in the process of structuring the story and the new games, and wanting to crystallize them into more detailed ideas.”

It took Hwang 12 long years for his passion project to make it onto the screen. Given the quick turnaround, he believes the follow-up series will need to be a team effort this time. In a Variety interview last year, he said, “If I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors”.

There’s no release date yet, but the new additional crew members are a positive indication we shouldn’t be waiting much longer.
