‘Project X’ Sequel: The Party Continues with a Female-Led Frenzy

More than a decade after the chaotic debut of 2012’s Project X, the sequel, Project XX, promises a fresh crew of female leads ready to raise some hell. Directed by Nima Nourizadeh and produced by Todd Phillips, whose credits include 2019’s ‘Joker‘ and its upcoming sequel, 2012’s found-footage style film is still fondly remembered for its unique take on the party genre.

The film follows three high school best friends who decide to throw an epic house party in an attempt to become popular. However, the situation quickly spirals out of control, leading them to face increasingly dangerous and absurd scenarios.

Recently enough, movie insider Jedd Sneider tweeted that Warner Bros. is still thinking about making “another one of these,” saying, “They’re gonna do another one of these with female leads and call it PROJECT XX.” Unsurprisingly, details like plot or tentative release dates remain scarce and it’s unclear if producer Todd Phillips is involved or if the original actors will return.

This isn’t the first time news of a Project X sequel has surfaced. Back in 2012, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Warner Bros. was developing a sequel, with Michael Bacall attached to write the screenplay for the treatment. However, the project never progressed beyond that stage, and no news followed. “Whether the treatment carries over to the script stage will depend on the producers, Todd Phillips and his Green Hat shingle and Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures. Bacall began work on the treatment several weeks before the movie opened,” wrote THR at the time.

With reports of a Project X sequel swirling once again and Hollywood’s obsession with sequels and love for playing with nostalgia, we might actually see a modern-day Project XX happen. The buzz on social media and online communities suggests an existing audience eager for a reboot, and with Todd Phillips busy with Joker 2, Project XX could potentially become his next project if the stars align. However, as of now, nothing has been officially confirmed, and it’s best to take these rumours with a grain of salt.
