The return to office mandate is real. Apple TV+ has finally unveiled when we’ll be heading back to Lumon Industries in the wildly popular drama Severance‘s upcoming second season: 17 January, 2025.
If you haven’t watched Season 1 yet you’ve thankfully got several months to get cracking (though you have had about three years already), and we really would recommend Severance: we named it one of the 20 best shows on the Apple TV+ platform for a reason. Season 2 is going to continue the story of Mark Scout’s efforts to understand just what the hell is going on in his workplace, and the strangely dystopian society the show takes place in. The first season ended with a bang, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
It’s like one really long episode of Black Mirror: if that doesn’t get you interested, I don’t know what will.
Our First Look at Severance Season 2
Apple TV+ finally released our first real look at the upcoming season, and it gives a small glimpse into the world we’re about to re-enter. Mark Scout (played by Adam Scott) is left pretty baffled in the trailer, wherein his work to expose Lumon Industry’s underhanded tactics have actually made him a bit of a celebrity, and rather than being punished, he’s instead made the face of the company’s efforts to ‘reform’ itself.
We’re sure it’s all a load of bull, but it’s definitely not what we were expecting from the second season. Not in a bad way, mind you.
We haven’t gone too far into spoiler territory yet, but let’s dip our toes in here.

See, Lumon Industries is staffed by people that have undergone ‘severance’: a procedure that splits your personality into two halves. One half is activated at work, while the other is activated at home – the idea being that the home version can live stress free without the usual work obligations, and the work version just gets the short end of the stick. That’s the concept, at least, but there’s plenty of shady shenanigans going on at Lumon, and the lines between what’s true, what’s a lie, who’s been severed, who hasn’t, and what the point is are blurry.
“This daring experiment in ‘work-life balance’ is called into question as Mark finds himself at the centre of an unravelling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work and of himself,” Apple explained.
“In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.”
It’s a story of mystery, purposefully and expertly crafted, that came around at the perfect moment. Severance launched in 2022, right as we all started feeling some real work-life balance issues due to working-from-home mandates, which played a big role in making it as successful as it was. The show deserves the praise, but it really did come out at exactly the right time.
