‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Trailer Proves Tom Cruise Still Has a Need For Speed

Do you feel the need? The need for speed? Perennial A-lister and bonafide action short king Tom Cruise certainly does, but the latest trailer for Top Gun: Maverick puts him far outside his comfort zone. In a bold new look at the upcoming sequel of Tony Scott’s 1986 action classic, Cruise is set to go face to face with his “deepest fears”, which looking at the unseasonably chiselled 59-year-old actor, appear to be ageing like a normal human being and touching carbs.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick will be released on May 26, 2022 and revisits Cruise’s titular Navy fighter jet pilot character, Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell more than thirty after the events of the original. A little older, Maverick’s reckless abandon and unearned confidence have been replaced with a subdued calmness and the poise of a seasoned professional, but his world is thrown into chaos when the past comes back to haunt him. While training a squad of new graduates, Maverick comes across Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, the son of his late friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw’, sending the test pilot into a spin.

“After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him,” the official synopsis reads. “Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.”

Joining Cruise for the all-out aviation blockbuster is a who’s who of the ’80s action scene. Val Kilmer is back on-board, alongside Jennifer Connelly and Ed Harris. From the new brigade, Top Gun: Maverick also sees Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Manny Jacinto, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez and Jay Ellis hit the big screen, alongside Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm. Best of all, Cruise will be handling producing duties for the sequel, alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, Christopher McQuarrie and David Ellison.

For action fans, the release has been a long time coming. Originally slated to hit theatres way back in 2019, Top Gun: Maverick has been pushed back a number of times due to the ongoing pandemic. With cinemas shut, many big-budget premieres such as Black Widow moved to streaming platforms, but Top Gun held strong. Finally, after nearly three years of delays and postponements, the action blockbuster is set to take to the skies. Top Gun: Maverick will officially hit cinemas on May 26, 2022.
