Who is Hunter Moore? Netflix Documentary Exposes The Most Hated Man on the Internet

Netflix’s new three-part documentary exposes the downfall of Hunter Moore, an online villain who posted nude photos of nonconsenting subjects to his website. From the makers of The Tindler Swindler and Don’t F**k with Cats, The Most Hated Man on the Internet features the victims of IsAnyoneUp.com and tells the story of a mother responsible for shutting down the project.

How Did Hunter Moore Start IsAnyoneUp.com?

Moore created IsAnyoneUp? in 2010, initially set up as a clubbing website. However, the site’s direction altered when he later posted a naked picture of a girl he was dating. Looking at the website a week later, there were over 14,000 hits, so he decided to add more naked pictures, not just from people who had submitted their own photos, but posted by other people – ex-boyfriends and boyfriends.

According to Rolling Stone, the pictures included the person’s full name, profession, city of residence, and social media profile, leaving employees, friends and family likely to find the images on Google. Motivated by the increasing advertising revenue, Moore took things to an even darker level by beginning to hack into people’s computers and posting indecent photos they found hidden in the owner’s files.

Over the course of its 16-month existence, Moore posted stolen photos of students, teachers, mothers and even women in wheelchairs. At its peak, the website had an estimated 350,000 unique users a day and was roughly generating USD$30,000 a month in advertising revenue. At the current time, absent revenge porn legislation provided Moore with protection, and like Facebook, hid behind the law that it was “user-generated content”.

Dubbing himself a “professional life ruiner”, Moore revelled in toying with victims when they asked for their photos to be taken down, once replying with one word: “LOL”. However, there was one mother, Charlotte Laws, who after learning her daughter had become another victim of Moore’s, was determined to put an end to his reign.

Who is Charlotte Laws?

When Charlotte Laws daughter, Kayla, appeared on Moore’s site, she made it her mission to shut the entire website down. After being dismissed by the LA police force, several internet providers and lawyers, she started to build her own file on Moore. The mother, who has two masters degrees according to her website, began to compile a dossier by talking to 40 victims around the world, and eventually handed it over to the FBI in 2012.

In an interview with The Guardian Laws said: “It’s pure misogyny. It’s about hating women. It’s about hurting them. That’s the whole purpose of the site. It wasn’t about the pictures. There were hundreds of people self-submitting photos, but they’re not victims because they are saying: ‘Hey, you can post my nude picture.’ But that wasn’t interesting. The thing is humiliating people. The kind of people who would never post their photo on a site like that, and who have a lot to lose. Who have high-profile jobs, or could have their entire life destroyed. That’s what he found enjoyable. That’s what his followers found enjoyable.”
