Indoor Rock Climbing v Bouldering

While you could definitely argue the two practices are similar, there are definitely some major differences when it comes to indoor rock climbing and bouldering. These include;

  • Gear – Most indoor rock climbing gyms will require you to cop a long list of gear, such as a harness, shoes, quickdraws, security device, helmets and ropes. With bouldering, all you really need is your shoes.
  • Technique – Climbing generally involves a lot of anchoring and pulling, secured by your lower body but powered by your upper. In bouldering, you’ll find there is far more toe, foot and heelwork involved.
  • Injuries – The sad reality of all sports. In climbing, your major injury concerns will come in the form of falls or from smashing against the wall when you come off. With bouldering, you are far less likely to encounter a rock fall, but that’s not to say you won’t miss the crash-pad.
