If you like it heavy, this is the best burger shop in Melbourne for you. Located on Melbourne’s infamous Lygon Street, you will find perhaps the best chicken burger place in Australia. If you love fried poultry, you’ll love this joint. While beef burgers are on offer, fried chicken is the star here. We encourage anyone visiting Sonny’s Fried Chicken & Burgers to consider the copious amounts of grease you will intake, then chow down on a burger so crispy and tender you’ll want to cry. The chickens used in said burgers are brined for 24 hours, pressure fried and delivered with a smile. Just feast your eyes above, need I say more?

4. Rocket Burgers and Fries
Sometimes, simplicity is the most important element when it comes to a burger – none of this brioche bun drizzled with aioli, just a greasy piece of meat. Rocket Burgers and Fries are perfect for just that. The burger menu is small, but, with an extensive choice of sauces, the result is a big flavour. We love the classic cheeseburger, loaded with pickles and ketchup.

14. 1090 Burger
Also starting out as a food truck, this contender for the best burgers Melbourne has to offer is now parked permanently in Richmond. There are a lot of things that make 1090 Burger ahead of the rest. For instance, all of its beef burgers use grass-fed Angus beef, aged over 60 days that is then minced daily and formed into patties by hand. Alongside this is a secret marinade that targets your umami senses and a ratio of 10 per cent fat and 90 per cent beef is followed religiously.

Burgertory opened its doors in September 2017, welcoming those seeking the best of both worlds. Bringing heavenly freshness and quality fit for gods, with a touch of Lucifers cheekiness. The menu is divided into 2 categories – 7 Deadly Sins and Archangel Chapter II. We can’t go past the ‘Abraham’ with chipotle fried chicken, jalapeños, American slaw, house-made sinner sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion in a charcoal-infused bun. Burgertory is a sinfully delicious haven for those who are seeking refuge.

16. Betty’s Burgers
This Queensland chain has opened up its doors in Melbourne to an adoring public. The burgers here are delicious and no fuss – the menu includes burgers such as the classic Betty made from Angus beef, Southern fried chicken, crispy pork belly, mushroom, and a bun-less burger served with lettuce. The southern fried chicken burger might be the best burger Melbourne has to offer, in our humble opinion.

17. Burger Road
This is an American-style burger shop that caters to everybody, serving up gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. What makes Burger Road so desirable is the fact that many of its products are heavy on the spice (and we love a bit of spice!) Yes, flavourful spicy wagyu beef burgers and loaded fries are what this place is all about. It seems that the desserts offered at this Fairfield joint are equally impressive.
Address: 89 Station Street, Fairfield VIC 3078

Phone: 0466 025 349
18. Fat Jaks
Located in the heart of St Kilda, Fat Jaks is an American-style burger joint that doesn’t disappoint in the portion and taste departments. Burgers are made with locally sourced premium ingredients in a comfortable and relaxed space. 19. Burger Boys
These boys do American-style dining to a tee, effortlessly transporting us to the streets of L.A, which is why we love it. They serve up hearty, juicy gourmet burgers – just what you’d expect from the USA. We can’t go past the ‘Rushmore’ with a 150g Beef Patty, American Hi-Melt Cheese, Onion Rings, Streaky Bacon & House made Smokey Bourbon BBQ Sauce, with a side of fried chicken wings, of course.

Phone: (03) 8597 8452
20. Easey’s
Besides the epic burgers served here, the fit-out of this place is perhaps what we love most. Located in a converted train with kitsch, retro decor with a graffitied lounge bar and cafe area, Easey’s is a Collingwood gem. The menu also lives up to the hype – the double BBQ bacon cheeseburger, the Lousiana fried chicken sandwich and the mac n cheese are some of our go-to’s.

Hours: Sun-Thurs 11am-10pm, Fri-Sat 11am-11pm
Phone: (03) 9417 2250
21. Juanita Peaches
Perhaps as low-key and as unpretentious as it gets, Juanita Peaches is oh-so Brunswick and we’re here for it. The counter-serve style restaurant means all the focus is on the food, and you can taste it. While they have plenty of mentionable burgers, it is actually the fried chicken here that takes the cake – it really is something else. Afterwards, grab yourself a donut, the space also houses all-day donuts.
Address: 12 Edward St, Brunswick VIC 3056
Hours: Mon-Thurs 12pm-9pm, Fri-Sun 11am-9pm
Phone: (03) 8060 6664
22. Chargrill Charlie’s
If you know, you know. This humble chicken shop may seem rather unassuming, but they actually do some of the best burgers around. Simple, delicious and with top-quality chicken, you can’t go wrong with a feed from Chooka’s. A burger here makes for the perfect lunch during a busy day, grab yourself a Portuguese burger with a grilled piece of chicken, chilli mayo, and Piri Piri sauce. Oh, and don’t forget the chips – they’re some of the best around.

23. 300 Grams Northcote
Northcote locals can’t seem to stop raving about this place, and it’s no secret why. The menu is compact – but delightful – featuring seven burgers that each hit the spot in different ways. Our recommendation is to try the namesake – the 300 Gs burger, a mammoth burger with a beef patty, Westmont pickles, cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato and a house-made burger sauce. The fried fish burger is also a must-try. The best bit? Almost every burger can be made vegetarian or vegan, just ask the friendly staff.

24. The Beast
Burgers, beers, cocktails, music – this place has it all. A Brunswick institution, The Beast can do no wrong in our eyes. We love coming here for Friday night hangs with mates, ordering a few drinks and soaking it all up with some epic burgers. We’re currently loving the ‘Filthy’ with a Wagyu Beef Patty, Jack Cheddar, B.East Chilli Paste, Pickles, Lettuce, Tomato, Ketchup and Jalapeño Miso Aioli. Burgers are served on potato buns and you can choose from a single or double, depending on how hungry you are.

Phone: (03) 9036 1456
25. Bar Margaux
While burgers may not be the first thing that comes to mind at Bar Margaux, you’d be surprised what little French haunt serves up. The New York-inspired French bistro is moody, decadent and full of French menu items – think escargot and steak tartare. But if you delve a little deeper, you will find the burger – complete with two Wagyu patties, bacon, organic cheese, and a bordelaise sauce on a milk-brioche bun. It is by far one of the most boujee burgers we’ve ever had the privilege to feast on. Grab a martini of a glass of rosé for the ultimate evening out.
Address: Basement/111 Lonsdale St, Melbourne VIC 3000
Hours: Tues-Weds 5pm-12am, Thurs 5pm-1am, Fri – Sat 5pm-3am

26. Butchers Diner
Are you all too familiar with those late-night burger cravings? Look no further than Butchers Diner. Serving up greasy, delicious feeds for under $10, you would be a fool not to stop by here after a night out. From the menu, we love the deviled egg hamburger served on a milk bun, or the chilli dogs also go down a treat. If you’re feeling brave and want to return for your hungover brekky – these guys also serve a killer egg burger with bacon.

27. Truck Stop Deluxe
Keeping it nice and simple, Truck Stop Deluxe is home to some of Melbourne’s most humble burgers. Replicating a trucker stop in its interior, so do the burgers in terms of what you’d expect to find at a truck stop along a highway. They have heaps of burgers to choose from along with fried chicken. Our tip? Treat yourself with the Nutella waffles after your feed – you won’t regret it.
Address: 98 Watton St, Werribee VIC 3030
Hours: Weds-Sun 11.30am-9pm
Phone: (03) 9741 4000
28. Kustom Burgers
Every burger here has a vegetarian option, which is one of the main reasons we come here every time we find ourselves up in Thornbury. With black and white chequered tile floor and vibrant coloured booths, the retro vibes here are also part of the experience. Our recommendation is the mushroom burger with southern fried portobello mushroom, coated with Kustom’s secret herbs and spices, coriander, topped with cheese, jalapeños, Kustom’s chipotle mayo and Kustom slaw. The milkshakes here are also divine!
Address: 861 High St, Thornbury VIC 3071
