When property icon Tim Gurner put his Hawksburn Place Residences development up for grabs, the market was shocked to see families, not investors rush to drop a whopping amount on the Toorak luxury apartment block. In fact, the residence was so popular, it achieved a suburb record price per square metre. Now, two years after the property went on the market, we have a first look inside the stunning penthouse that headlines the incredible new development. And it’s luxe.

Led by Gurner himself, along with esteemed interior designer David Hicks, Cox Architecture and landscape architect Paul Bangay, the new penthouse property is worth the wait. Owners Joan and Wes purchased the entire top floor of the property off the plan back in 2018, using it as an empty shell for their completely bespoke home.

“Joan and Wes’s situation was really unique in that they were able to purchase this penthouse as a shell and work not just with us as the developer but the project’s interior designer to create a completely bespoke home that was of their own design in every way,” Gurner said. “The result is a home that encapsulates luxury penthouse living so effortlessly, but considered and brought to life in a way that is at once breathtaking and at the same time, deeply refined and personal.”

The expansive penthouse spans three bedrooms, three bathrooms, a powder room, laundry, study, private retreat and a whopping six privately garaged car spaces, rivalling only Warney for the best carport in Australia. The Hawksburn Place Residences penthouse also cops a wrap-around 360-degree, 461sqm rooftop terrace that boasts views of the CBD, expansive gardens and a 12.5m heated plunge pool.

In the kitchen, the Hawksburn Place Residences penthouse features a Calacatta Oro honed marble bench and rangehood, with bench and splashback in Zimbabwe black granite and a fireplace clad in Nero Marquina marble.

“The apartment occupies the entire top floor of the building with 360-degree glazing, so a darker interior really suited the space. It has allowed some warmth and respite from the sun,” Hicks said. “The tension between the decorative elements and furnishings is well-considered and talks of the clients’ travels while softly melding the crossroads of different cultures.”

As we’ve come to expect from Hicks and Gurner, this penthouse isn’t short on luxury trimmings, either. Inside you’ll find coffered LED ceilings, private dual lifts with direct access to the apartment and feature chandeliers sourced from Paris by the couple themselves. Add that to the seven-day a week concierge, fully equipped gym and sauna, and you’ve got one hell of a property.
