Jim Carrey, the iconic comedic actor, is bidding farewell to his beloved Los Angeles abode that has served as a serene escape from the bustling city for the past thirty years. Tucked away in the exclusive Brentwood neighbourhood, this two-acre estate is surrounded by 280 feet of meticulously manicured hedges, providing a private oasis for the star. Throughout the years, this property has not only served as a peaceful retreat but also as a creative playground where Carrey has indulged in his artistic passions. From its brick facade to the custom Art Deco theatre, the home is a true reflection of the actor’s flamboyant nature and eclectic style. In fact, fans may recall the home from Carrey’s appearance in the Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee episode with Jerry Seinfeld, where he hilariously climbed over the front door. Now, Carrey is putting his Brentwood paradise up for sale for a hefty USD$28.9 million (AU$42.8 million), per The WSJ.

Carrey purchased the sprawling 12,700 square-foot ranch-style home in Brentwood in 1994, shortly after the release of his breakout film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. The main house boasts five bedrooms, each with a unique blend of classic brick exterior and modern interior design. The property also includes a gym, tennis court, a pool with a waterfall and spa, a pool house complete with a sauna and steam room, and even a dedicated outdoor platform for yoga and meditation.
Step inside, and you’ll be greeted with the grandeur of pitched, beamed ceilings with skylights that add an air of spaciousness to the interiors. Each of the living, dining and family rooms is warm and inviting, featuring its own cozy fireplaces. The home’s design also emphasizes indoor-outdoor living, with French doors leading to an expansive courtyard patio that provides a seamless connection with the outdoors. The primary bedroom suite is a true retreat, offering a comfortable sitting area, a crackling fireplace, and a covered balcony with stunning views of the property.
The home is a true reflection of Carrey’s personality and creative spirit. The custom-built Art Deco style home theatre, with its plush mohair sofas, burl wood columns, and snack area, is a tribute to the actor’s love for the dramatic. The theatre is lined with costumes from some of Carrey’s most famous films, including The Cable Guy and The Grinch. In the adjacent bar area, Carrey’s Batman Forever Riddler costume is on display, alongside some of his MTV Movie & TV Awards trophies.
The neutral and understated interiors are punctuated with bold bursts of colour, including pieces from Carrey’s own art collection. The property’s lawn features a sculpture called “Ayla” by Carrey, depicting a nude woman peering through a picture frame. Despite the art and sentimental mementos, they are not included in the sale of the home.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, the first to report the news, Carrey shared his reasons for selling. He referred to the property as a “place of enchantment and inspiration,” but now spends very little time there and he would like “someone else to enjoy it like I have”.
Janelle Friedman of Sotheby’s International Realty, Santa Monica / Venice Brokerage holds the listing. Check out more images below.
