$9,790 Leica Q3 Makes Full-Frame Cameras Great (but Very Expensive) Again

Leica is back with a new starlet in the world of full-frame compact cameras: the Leica Q3. This third generation of the esteemed Q series carries the torch of Leica‘s legacy, combining top-tier craftsmanship, an effortlessly chic design, and user-friendly operation.

The Q series has been held in high regard worldwide since its introduction in 2015 and its popularity extends beyond shutterbugs and creatives to those posing in front of the lens. With the Q3, Leica aims to elevate this legacy, packing the device with exciting new features and a lightning-fast Summilux lens.

The heart of the Q3 is its new BSI-CMOS sensor featuring Triple-Resolution Technology. This sensor can capture raw images in 60, 36, or 18 MP resolution, allowing you to choose between mind-blowing detail or faster operation with smaller file sizes. Paired with a sensitivity range of ISO 50 to 100,000 and the latest generation Maestro Series processor with L2 Technology, this camera ensures excellent operating speeds and first-rate image quality.

The Leica Summilux 28 mm f/1.7 ASPH lens, a marvel in its own right, comes with an integrated macro mode, making it possible to take close-up shots from as close as 17 cm. This third-gen member of the Q family also offers an extended digital zoom, letting you zoom to focal lengths of 28, 35, 50, 75, and 90 mm.

While not quite as slick as the recent D-Lux 007 Edition, the new Leica Q3 also introduces two new handy helpers, Leica Perspective Control (LPC) and Leica Dynamic Range (LDR), designed to deliver perfect JPEG images without post-processing. The Q3 also includes a significant autofocus update, sporting a new hybrid autofocus system with phase detection that ensures rapid, precise focusing and tracking of objects, leading to sharp, brilliant images that can be reviewed on the new 5.76 MP OLED viewfinder.

Another noteworthy feature is the new tiltable 3-inch high-resolution touchscreen that opens up unique viewing angles and creative opportunities. And yes, the camera still offers dust and splash protection thanks to its IP52 certification, even with the movable display.

On the connectivity front, the Leica Q3 doesn’t disappoint. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi come standard, and the advanced Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology has bumped up the transfer speed to the Leica FOTOS app by up to 10 times compared to the previous model.

Moreover, thanks to the stable connection and high data transfer rates with the Leica FOTOS app, users can now effortlessly upload videos from the camera to a smartphone. Alternatively, they can import special ‘Leica Looks’ onto the camera to create stunning JPEG images. The Leica Q3 offers a range of connection modes, from ‘Eco’ to ‘Performance’, ensuring optimal mobile workflow and energy management.

Another highlight of the Leica Q3 is its Apple certification as a “Made for iPhone and iPad” accessory. This feature, along with the included Leica FOTOS cable, positions the Leica Q3 as the ultimate tool for everyday users seeking to express their creative vision. It’s an apt description when you think about the multitude of recent innovations that the German brand has made, including the home entertainment system, impressive binoculars and L1/L2 timepieces.

The Q3 records video at a staggering 8k resolution and supports efficient codecs like H.265 and Apple’s ProRes. External devices such as gimbals, power banks, and display recorders can be connected directly via USB-C and HDMI.

Moreover, the Leica Q3 offers wireless charging with the new Leica Charging Pad and a separate camera handgrip. The charging pad can conveniently recharge the new powerful battery BC-SCL6 of the Q3 and many other Qi-compatible devices. Fortunately, any Qi charger capable of outputting 10W or higher can charge the Q3 if you want to avoid shelling out USD$175 for the exclusive wireless charger manufactured by Native Union.

In true Leica fashion, the Q3 is also about customisation. You can add your personal touch to the camera body, from leather protectors and lens caps to retro-look lens hoods, thumb rests, soft-release buttons, and flash shoe covers. The Leica Q3 is now available at all Leica Stores and authorised dealers in Australia from Friday, 26 May. The recommended retail price is AUD$9,790.00 (including GST).

Leica Camera Australia also hosts in-store events featuring acclaimed street photographer Jesse Marlow, renowned travel photographer, and Leica Akademie Principal Nick Rains. They’ll be sharing their firsthand experiences with the new Q3, plus an in-depth review of all the new features. It’s happening in Melbourne on 2 June, Chadstone on 3 June, and Sydney on 8 June 2023.
