It’s no surprise that Roadshow Films greenlit Force of Nature, given the original’s impressive $20.1 million box office earnings and its position as the sixth highest-grossing film in Australia two years ago, behind blockbuster Hollywood franchises such as Spider-Man: No Way Home, No Time to Die, Godzilla vs Kong, Peter Rabbit 2, and Fast and Furious 9. In fact, The Dry remained in the top three films in Australia for the first five weeks of its release and currently sits at number 14 on the all-time Australian box office chart, just behind Red Dog.

The upcoming flick promises to deliver another gripping thriller set against the backdrop of Australia’s unique landscape. This time, Bana’s character, Aaron Falk, teams up with federal agent Carmen Cooper (played by Jacqueline McKenzie) in a race against time to find their informant, Alice Russell (Anna Torv), who disappears during a corporate hiking trip with four other women. Her hiking buddies turned suspects are played by Deborra-Lee Furness, Robin McLeavy (Homeland), Sisi Stringer (Mortal Kombat) and Lucy Ansell (Utopia).

Similar to its predecessor, the sequel will be filmed on location in Victoria, where the landscape itself plays a vital role in the story. However, unlike the arid conditions seen in The Dry, the new movie will be set in a colder, lusher, and potentially wetter environment, with principal filming locations including the Dandenongs, Yarra Valley, and Otways.

Robert Connolly returns to write and direct, with Steve Hutensky, Bruna Papandrea, and Jodie Matterson of Made Up Stories producing alongside Bana and Connolly. Force of Nature: The Dry 2 is heading to Australian cinemas on August 24, 2023. Check out the trailer above.
