LeBron James Takes Flight in Peacock’s ‘Shooting Stars’ Biopic Trailer

LeBron James and his three best friends embark on an epic quest to conquer the basketball world in the official trailer for Peacock’s Shooting Stars. While billed as a biopic, the film will not attempt to encompass every single aspect of his life or career. Rather, it will primarily focus on the early years of LeBron James as a budding basketball prodigy at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.

The movie is set sometime in the 1990s and is adapted from the 2009 novel of the same name which is written by LeBron James himself alongside Buzz Bissinger. Emmy-nominated American director Chris Robinson is in the director’s chair, directing the flick from the screenplay penned by Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier. Academy Award nominees Rachel Winters and Terence Winter have come on board to co-produce with James and business partner Maverick Carter’s billion-dollar media operation, SpringHill Company.

In the official trailer for Shooting Stars, we catch a glimpse of a young LeBron James alongside his three closest pals, whose connection extends beyond the realm of basketball. Dubbed the “Fab Four” in homage to the renowned “Fab Five” of the Michigan Wolverines during that time, they were brought together by their shared passion for the game and “their yearning for companionship.”

However, things start to get ugly for our young basketball champs “when the coach at the top basketball school in their district threatens to separate them by putting Lil Dru on junior varsity.” In an attempt to stay (and play) together, our boys decide to “switch schools to be able to play varsity together, joining the team at a predominantly white Catholic school instead.”

The trailer excellently showcases the struggles and challenges faced by LeBron and his buddies as they try to balance basketball, friendship, and life all at once. Assistance arrives in the unlikely figure of their new coach, Dermot Mulroney, a “disgraced former college coach seeking redemption of his own.” With the addition of former rival turned teammate Romeo Travis, portrayed by Sterling “Scoot” Henderson, the group finds themselves not only battling rivals on the court but also confronting the adversities of real life.

Headlined by Caleb McLaughlin, known for his role in Stranger Things, Shooting Stars features an exceptional cast. McLaughlin portrays Lil Dru, the son of Coach Dru Joyce, played by Wood Harris. Making his big screen debut, Marquis “Mookie” Cook brilliantly embodies the young LeBron James, while Avery Wills Jr takes on the role of Willie McGree. Additionally, the film showcases the talent of Sterling “Scoot” Henderson, the highly regarded top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, as LeBron’s former rival, Romeo Travis.

According to the official synopsis, “Shooting Stars is the inspiring origin story of a basketball superhero, revealing how LeBron James and his childhood friends become the #1 high school team in the country, launching James’s breathtaking career as a four-time NBA Champion, two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.”

With Shooting Stars now streaming on Peacock, get ready to witness the captivating journey of friendship, redemption, and triumph.
