Move over, Queen Elizabeth, there’s a new power family in town, and it’s the Kennedys. Netflix, clearly in need of some American royalty to match The Crown, is taking a leap into the realm of U.S. politics with a brand new upcoming series focused on John F. Kennedy.
Per Variety, the streaming service is currently hard at work creating a limited TV series centered on the life of the 35th President of the United States. This upcoming series will draw its inspiration from the highly lauded book, “JFK: Coming Of Age In The American Century, 1917-1956,” authored by Fredrik Logevall. Originally published in 2020, Logevall’s book serves as the inaugural volume in a planned two-part biography of John F. Kennedy.
The first instalment delves into Kennedy’s early years, tracing his journey from birth through his tenure as a junior U.S. Senator representing Massachusetts. Netflix’s untitled JFK series will be scripted and executive produced by the distinguished Academy Award winner Eric Roth celebrated for his work on blockbusters such as ‘Forrest Gump,’ ‘A Star is Born,’ and the eagerly awaited ‘Killers of the Flower Moon.’
Netflix’s vision, as per Variety, is to craft an American narrative reminiscent of their regal hit, ‘The Crown,’ which has beautifully explored the British royal family’s history. Given the indelible mark the Kennedy family has left on American history, it’s a fitting comparison.
Since the series is still in its early stages of development, further details are sparse. Much like the mystique surrounding the Kennedys, it also remains uncertain whether the show will follow ‘The Crown’s‘ pattern of cycling through actors as characters age. Additionally, the streamer has yet to reveal who will be stepping into JFK’s shoes or provide further information about the cast and crew. With the SAG-AFTRA strikes still ongoing, there is potential for disruptions and delays in the production process.
Elected in 1960 and taking office in 1961, Kennedy was known for his good looks, charm, and his knack for public speaking. He and his wife, First Lady Jackie Kennedy, represented the height of American glamour and the optimism of the early 1960s. He hobnobbed with Hollywood royalty, including the likes of Frank Sinatra, and was rumoured to have had numerous alleged romantic entanglements, including the iconic Marilyn Monroe.
His presidency oversaw some of the most pivotal events of the 20th century, including the commencement of the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Civil Rights Movement. His tragic assassination in 1963 remains one of the most shocking moments in modern history.
