Meet ‘The Boys’ New Supes – Firecracker and Sister Sage

Vought International is on a hiring spree. The fictional American multi-billion dollar superhero entertainment conglomerate is bringing two new supes into the fold and they aren’t what you’d expect. In a reveal on Monday, streaming service Amazon Prime Video dropped a first look at Firecracker and Sister Sage, the latest anti-heroes set to arrive for The Boys season four.

The first official images show actors Susan Heyward and Valorie Curry suiting up as the new Sister Sage and Firecracker characters ahead of the season four launch, which is expected to land in 2024. Just like Jensen Ackles’ fan favourite Solider Boy, who was introduced part-way through season three, both of the new costumes were designed by Laura Jean Shannon. While on the outside, it’s clear that the design of the supersuits is intrinsically linked to each new character’s arc, fans can’t read into it too much. Amazon previously stated that everything about Firecracker and Sister Sage will be “kept under wraps until the season airs”.

Importantly, both of the actors behind The Boys’ new characters arrive with some serious credentials. Heyward shot to stardom as Tamika Ward in the breakout smash Orange is the New Black and was recently lauded for her portrayal of Demetria Barnes in the OWN series Delilah. Curry, on the other hand, has carved out a niche for enterprising characters with a penchant for mystery. The American actor recently took the reins as the lead in the Dan Brown adaption The Lost Symbol, after honing her skills in the superhero game with a role opposite Griffin Newman and Peter Serafinowicz in the Amazon series The Tick.

Both new characters were initially teased way back in August when The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke tweeted his excitement over the new season additions. “These new Supes are some of the best & craziest ever written for #TheBoys. You are going to love them. And by love, I mean be absolutely horrified & a tiny bit nauseous. WELCOME TO THE FAMILY YOU GUYS.”

Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s bestselling comic book series, The Boys has proven to be one of Amazon Prime Video’s most successful series. Following a group of ordinary humans, otherwise known as The Boys, as they attempt to expose the evil doings of the mega-corporation Vought International, the series tackles the superhero genre in a completely new way. From the outset fans loved the concept, however, the show’s ability to blur the lines between reality and fantasy has seen it attract a massive global audience.

In season three, show creator Kripke dialled things up to eleven, introducing new characters, iconic fight seasons and even an exploding penis (not to mention the insane orgy scene). Naturally, The Boys’ constant efforts to push the boundaries of what is possible on television has fans excited for the next instalment, and it comes amid a series of cliffhangers.

At the end of the last instalment, the Seven has been left with just three superheroes remaining — Homelander (Antony Starr), the Deep (Chace Crawford), and A-Train (Jessie T. Usher). With Homelander reunited with his son Ryan, it appears to be happy families, but the final scene showed that the antagonist’s desire to kill may have flowed down the gene pool. Meanwhile, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) only has a few months left to live and the rest of his team appears at a crossroads of leadership. Insert two new Supes and one creepy kid, and you’ve got yourself a sure-fire winner for Amazon Prime.

There’s no word yet on when The Boys season four will release, however, it is expected to land sometime in early 2024. In the meantime, check out the first official images of the new Supers Firecracker and Sister Sage above.
