THE ICONIC’s Latest Initiative Keeps Clothes Out of Landfill

Online fashion retailer THE ICONIC has announced RCYCL, a new initiative aimed at curbing clothing waste in Australia. According to the brand, the project facilitates a clothing donation and recycling service, whereby customers have the option to either donate pre-loved clothes directly to Salvos Stores, or send their unwearable clothes to be recycled through the purchase of a satchel.

The announcement of RCYCL comes after new data from RMIT University revealed that 200,000 tonnes of clothing are sent to landfill in Australia each year, due to a lack of systematic collection of unwearable items and limited recycling capacity. A further 190,000 tonnes of clothing are donated to charities, however, some of this is unwearable. Gayle Burchell, chief commercial and sustainability officer at THE ICONIC, explained that RCYCL will not only help customers reduce their personal textile waste footprint but also ease the pressure and cost from charities like Salvos Stores.

“As a leader in the Australian fashion industry, we are committed to advancing sustainability and circularity through innovative solutions,” Burchell said. “Our partnership with RCYCL represents a step towards a more circular fashion system by addressing the lack of systematic collection of end-of-life clothing.”

Customers who want to get involved in the RCYCL initiative need to pre-sort their unwanted clothing into ‘donation’ or ‘recycle’ piles, before purchasing a satchel. Once the order is placed, customers will receive their bags, then fill them with their pre-sorted items and scan the QR code on the bag to find a HUBBED Parcelpoint location. The RCYCL clothing donation initiative is active now, with RCYCL satchels available to purchase via the online retailer.

Tyler Everingham’s Bathurst 1000 Helmet to Be Auctioned for Breast Cancer Research

Rising motorsport star Tyler Everingham is set to auction off his race-worn helmet from the upcoming Bathurst 1000 for Breast Cancer Research. The co-driver with Tickford Racings Thomas Randle has teamed up with Pickles and charity organisation Race For a Cure to raise funds for Breast Cancer Trials, one of the world’s leading research bodies. Everingham’s custom-painted BELL Model HP7 Carbon V8 Supercar race helmet, which has been worn in multiple high-profile races, will go to one lucky winner and in the process, help make a difference in the lives of others.

“This is not just a helmet – it’s a symbol of endurance, perseverance, and the fight against breast cancer,” Peter Best, sales executive, Industrial at Pickles, said. “Our national reach means we can bring this incredible auction item to a wide audience, raising as much as possible for breast cancer research.”

The initiative is backed by businessmen and racing drivers Ben and Michael Kavich, who founded Race For A Cure after witnessing the impacts of the deadly illness first hand. Both their mother and grandmother were diagnosed with breast cancer, and in 2016, Ben’s wife, Toula, was also diagnosed.

“Breast cancer has touched my family in ways I never imagined,” Ben Kavich said. “It’s why we started Race For A Cure – to help fund the research that can save lives and offer better treatment options. The auction of Tyler’s helmet is a powerful way to contribute to that cause, and I’m honoured to be part of this effort.”

Tyler Everingham’s Bathurst 1000 helmet will hit the auction block at 10am AEDT on Thursday, 10 October 2024 with final bids taken at 3pm AEDT on Monday, 14 October 2024. The proceeds of the auction will go directly to Breast Cancer Trials, with the helmet holding an estimated value of AUD$10,000.
