Luxury automaker Lexus has introduced five new IS sport sedans to the Aussie market and we couldn’t be more delighted. With their evocative curves, imaginative technology, and leading dynamics, each one redefines the sport sedan concept with resounding precision. Speaking of technology, the entire range will deliver five ‘Lexus firsts’ in Australia as standard features. Combine that with upgraded powertrains, stronger bodies, wider tracks, and lighter suspension, and you end up with the most stunning IS models to date.
Bold design and imaginative technology lie at the heart of each new Lexus IS. The sleek and aggressive curves impart a sporty vibe while the underlying intelligence adds welcoming and protective brains to the palpable brawn. As we mentioned above, the new range will host five ‘Lexus firsts’ in Australia as standard features. That includes intersection turning assist, emergency steering assist, automated collision notification, SOS call, and stolen vehicle tracking.
As if that weren’t enough, Lexus has implemented even more choice features as standard specs, the type of which normally come at an upcharge. We’re talking 18″ alloy wheels (on the Luxury models), electric park brakes, a new 10.3″ touch-display, a pre-collision system with both pedestrian detection and daytime cyclist detection, all-speed Active Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Blind-Spot Monitor, Parking Support Brake, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert + Brake.
What, you thought we were done? The technology train keeps rolling with features that many Lexus owners already know and love, such as smart entry and start, heated 8-way power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, 10-speaker audio, DAB+5, satellite navigation, voice control, and LED headlamps with automatic high-beams. All this before we get to the upgraded powertrain, lighter suspension components, and improved design features, which respectively and collectively crank up the driving dynamics.
The new range kicks things off with the IS 300 Luxury model. It comes powered by a 180kW and 350Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is now Euro 6 emissions compliant. Also featured is a retuned eight-speed automatic transmission for better response and performance.
Throw down a little extra cash and you’re in IS 300h Luxury territory. This one employs an innovative Lexus self-charging hybrid electric system, which generates a combined 133kW and improves the fuel economy. Opt for an Enhancement Pack on either model and you get even more features in return.
At the higher end of the range are three IS F Sport models: 300, 300h, and 350 F. All the true road warriors out there will want to scope the IS 350 F Sport, in particular. Focussed intensively on the driving experience, it represents the first time that an IS 350 model is singularly available as an F Sport grade. Under the hood is a 3.5-litre normally aspirated V6 petrol engine along with a reworked eight-speed automatic transmission.
This will also mark the first time that an IS F Sport features 19″ alloy wheels as standard. Other standard specs include an F Sport bodykit and spoiler, F Sport scuff plates, hi-grade LED headlamps, four-mode Drive Select, adaptive variable suspension, F Sport leather-accented trim, sport pedals and seats, driver memory settings, ventilated front seats, and an LFA-style 8″ TFT driver display. Enhancement Packs are also available on all three F Sport models.
Regarding the new IS series, Lexus Australia Chief Executive Scott Thompson said, “An intense focus on evocative design, imaginative technology and leading driving dynamics will help ensure a new generation of Lexus customers are welcomed into IS sports sedan ownership.”
He added, “The sports focus of the new IS, alongside the luxurious ES, together deliver two distinct personalities for Lexus customers to select from in this segment.”
The new Lexus IS range is currently available to Australian customers. Prices start at AU$61,500 for the IS 300 Luxury and work their way up from there. Get behind the wheel and expect entirely new tiers of performance on every level, with or without the upgrades. This is the sports sedan concept redefined and in a manner that only a brand like Lexus can execute. Australia welcomes it with open arms.
