Triumph Scrambler 400 X Review: Perfect Balance of Style, Performance and Price


Motorcycles hold a special allure, symbolising freedom, adventure, and a touch of rebellion. Yet, for many, especially those not initiated into the world of two-wheeled machines in their childhood, the prospect of riding a motorcycle can be daunting. It’s not just about taming a piece of machinery that likes to lean; it’s also about committing to a significant investment.

However, these last few years have seen a shift. A new wave of low-capacity, learner-friendly motorcycles has emerged, aiming to make motorcycling more approachable and attainable for newcomers. Yet, amid this sea of practicality, very few of these models you would describe as “aspirational”. Well, Triumph thinks it is about to change that.

With the unveiling of its all-new 400cc platform, the British marque seeks to redefine what it means to ride a smaller-displacement motorcycle. Launching in two guises, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, Triumph aims to inject a dose of aspiration into the learner-friendly segment.

While both models share nearly identical specifications on paper, It was when I experienced them firsthand, riding them back-to-back on Victoria’s B roads, that I could genuinely respect their individual characters.

Design

Right from first glance, there’s no doubt the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X borrow from Triumph’s impressive heritage. Their unmistakable silhouettes pay homage to the brand’s storied past while embracing a modern aesthetic. Whether it’s the sleek lines of the roadster or the rugged stance of the scrambler, each model oozes a timeless charm.

Triumph’s meticulous attention to detail for an entry-level motorcycle is commendable. Signature features such as sculpted fuel tanks and engine profiles give a nod to the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship, while traditional elements like finned cylinder heads and exhaust header clamps seamlessly integrate with contemporary features such as concealed liquid-cooling in a way that always looks cohesive. Rounding off the familiar features are the trademark black powder-coated engine casings and the gold anodised forks, ensuring every angle is distinctly Triumph.

In terms of colours, the Speed 400 offers a selection of vibrant two-tone paint schemes, each featuring a prominent Triumph tank graphic. Carnival Red, Caspian Blue, and Phantom Black options accentuate the more modern palette.

On the other hand, the Scrambler 400 X embraces its adventurous spirit with rugged Matt Khaki Green and Fusion White, the bold Carnival Red and Phantom Black, or the sleek Phantom Black and Silver Ice. From the protective elements for the headlight, radiator, and sump to the extended front mudguard, every detail speaks to the bike’s off-road potential.

Technology

Usually, motorcycles in this segment are a little agricultural to keep prices down, but Triumph has raised the bar in the tech department.

Powered by Bosch engine management with ride-by-wire throttle, both models offer the seamless response that we know and love, and both the bikes are equipped with switchable traction control and Bosch dual-channel ABS.

In terms of instrumentation, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X feature modern dual-format instruments with analogue speedos and integrated LCD screens. These displays provide the important stuff, such as a digital tachometer, fuel range, and gear indicator. Intuitive controls mounted on the handlebars make navigation straightforward, while a convenient USB-C charging socket keeps devices powered on the move.

When it comes to visibility, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X come standard with all-LED lighting systems. The headlight incorporates a distinctive daytime running light with a Triumph DRL signature,  while the tail-light and slim indicators add to the bike’s clean aesthetic.

Riding Impressions

Once out on the road, both bikes were keen to impress. The all-new 400cc engine produces 40 PS of power and 37.5 Nm of torque, resulting in some very usable pulling power in a package that only weighs 170kg (Speed) and 179kg (Scrambler). The six-speed gearbox shifts seamlessly, while the torque-assist clutch keeps lever effort to a minimum and prevents rear wheel locks during downshifts.

From the get-go, it was clear to see that the ergonomics of the Scrambler 400 X were better suited to my 190cm frame. With its larger 19-inch front wheel, longer front suspension, and upright riding position, taller riders will prefer the rugged ride for ergonomics alone. But it also had the added benefit of a bash plate, handguards and headlight protector, so even if you don’t take the Scrambler through the bush, you’ll at least look the part while you’re considering it.

On the other hand, the Speed 400 was the better bike through the turns. With a smaller front wheel and some proper sport rubber, the Speed 400 was easy to tip in and out of corners. The chassis was well balanced, the steering was predictable, and while there were times where you could do with a little more poke, the Speed 400 is proof that it’s more fun riding a slow bike fast than the other way around.

Verdict

In the realm of motorcycles, few offerings manage to strike the perfect balance between quality, aesthetics, performance, and heritage, especially at an attractive price point. Triumph’s latest creations, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, shatter expectations by flawlessly blending these elements, setting a new standard for value in the market. The Speed 400 roadster starts at AUD$8990 ride away, while the Scrambler 400 X is AUD$9990 ride away.

This aggressive pricing strategy ensures aspiring riders can access Triumph’s heritage without breaking the bank. Furthermore, Triumph offers the bikes with a two-year unlimited kilometre warranty and 16,000 km service intervals.

When contemplating which model best suits your needs, consider ergonomics and intended usage factors. If you’re a taller rider seeking versatility for daily commuting or off-road adventures, the Scrambler 400 X’s larger front wheel and extended front suspension travel offer a spacious and comfortable ride with a more rugged aesthetic. Conversely, if you’re a smaller rider or prioritise nimble handling and spirited rides through winding roads, the Speed 400’s roadster-specific geometry and confidence-inspiring agility make it the ideal choice.

Regardless of which model you get your hands on, there’s no denying Triumph has knocked it out of the park with the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X. These models not only redefine the standards of modern classics but also move the goalposts in the sub-400cc segment, making them an irresistible proposition for anyone seeking the ultimate balance of looks, reliability, build quality, and affordability.
