Visiting The Hunter Valley FAQs
Pokolbin is the most popular town to stay in because it’s right in the middle of the wineries. You’ll find plenty of cellar doors, restaurants, and accommodation here. That said, Rothbury, Lovedale, and Wollombi are also good picks if you prefer something quieter with easier access to local produce and smaller vineyards.
It’s about a two-hour drive north of Sydney, depending on traffic. That makes it one of the easiest wine regions to visit for a weekend trip.
Brokenwood and Tyrrell’s are classics, while Audrey Wilkinson is famous for its views. Pepper Tree and Scarborough Wine Co are great for tastings, and smaller producers like Gundog Estate are worth a visit if you want something more boutique.
You can visit year-round, but spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are the sweet spots. The weather is mild, the vineyards look their best, and many wineries release new vintages around these times. Summer can be hot but is good for concerts and outdoor events, while winter is generally quieter.
The Hunter Valley is best known for Semillon and Shiraz. Semillon here is crisp when young and develops honeyed, toasty flavours as it ages. Shiraz tends to be medium-bodied with bright fruit and earthy notes. You’ll also find plenty of Chardonnay, Verdelho, and newer styles from boutique wineries.
