Matthew McConaughey Set to Join ‘Yellowstone’ Universe as Drama Surrounds Kevin Costner’s Future

The entertainment world is buzzing in its cowboy boots with rumours of a potential spinoff series for Yellowstone. Though negotiations are ongoing and no deal has been struck yet, we’re sure we speak for everyone in expressing excitement at the possibility of hearing Matthew McConaughey’s dulcet tones on the ranch.

However, there’s also some drama surrounding the future of the original series. Deadline reported that Paramount Network may end Yellowstone earlier than planned due to scheduling conflicts with its star, Kevin Costner. The actor is said to have demanded to only work for a week on the second half of season five, which is set to air later this year.

Paramount Network has yet to make an official statement, but insiders claim that the show will continue, with or without its star. The network said, “We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone, and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come.” The statement went on to highlight the creative mind behind the series, Taylor Sheridan and expressed the network’s interest in working with McConaughey in the future.

“Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built,” the Paramount Network spokesperson statement continued. “Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.

Some sources caution that the rumours of Costner’s departure and the potential end of the original series could be a negotiating tactic by Paramount executives, including Chris McCarthy, who oversees the franchise for the conglomerate. Costner, who plays the role of John Dutton, won a Golden Globe for his performance on the show and remains a central figure in the Yellowstone universe. If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s to not mess with John Dutton in a power struggle…

The first half of Yellowstone’s fifth season was a hit, with 8.2 million same-day viewers and a key demographic of adults 18-49 tuning in to watch. The show is currently the most-watched scripted show on broadcast or cable networks this season. While there’s no specific release date for Part 2, the good news is that fans are getting the most episodes in a season of Yellowstone yet: 14.

In addition to the original series, Paramount Network also has a popular prequel series, 1923, which stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren and is set to return for its second season.
