Serving as an entry point to the world of New Balance retro-revivals, the 2002r has become one of the sportswear brands favourite (and best selling) sneakers of the last two years. With a host of collaborations up its sleeve, including two big-hitting Sahele Bembury models and a ‘Protection Pack’ lineup that had fans circling around the block, it’s become a must-have sneaker for heads everywhere.
In their upcoming release, the General Release colours look to steal that spotlight back from the big-name collaborations.

While the collaborations enjoy their time in the limelight, the General Release or ‘GR’ colourways that New Balance has continued to drop on this model (amongst others) are often underappreciated and highly underrated. The best part? All of us can get our hands on these far easier than your average collaboration sneaker with higher production numbers and overall less ‘hype’ to drive sales to the secondary market. What’s shaping up to be one of their best drops to date, New Balance is releasing another batch of GR 2002r models in a range of pastels and moody hues. Let’s check them out.
We’re on the fence about which colourway we like the most. The green would be an early favourite with Aime Leon Dore vibes galore, as well as the Red that pops in a mature and stylish way. We love the combination of suede, mesh, and 3M detailing on the 2002r and the cream midsole blends with a contrasting outsole and tan cushioning unit at the heel. Standardised across the range are grey-toned ‘N’ logos on the lateral and medial sides of the sneakers.
Big pants is a trend that’s looking to move into 2022, and the 2002r is best paired with some quality double knee trousers, vintage Levi’s, or pretty much anything you can find in the catalogues of Stussy, Aime Leon Dore, Nepenthes or even Our Legacy for an elevated touch.
While there’s no official date set for release, keep your eyes peeled to New Balance online, as well as sneaker stores such as Above The Clouds. The latest New Balance 2002r colourways will retail for $220 AUD.
