Song for the Mute x adidas Originals ‘Retro-Informed’ Collection Has a Sense of Belonging
Song for the Mute is not an overnight success story of preorders, Gilden T-shirts and oversized hoodies. They’re an Australian label whose history dates back to the early 2010s when founders Melvin Tanaya and Lyna Ty picked up the 2011 L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival Designer Award – the first ever menswear label to do so.
Fast forward years later – a 2019 GQ Fashion Brand of the Year award – and SFTM is stepping into its first major collaboration, launching the brand’s name beyond the depths of fashion forums. They’ve teamed up with adidas to launch the adidas SFTM-001 Shadowturf sneaker alongside a range of collab apparel from September 23rd, 2022.

The collaboration coincides with SFTM’s latest collection, titled ‘Les Olympiades’ it harks back to Lyna’s childhood, where she lived in Les Olympiades in Paris’ 13th arrondissement. Originally created by Michel Holley in the ’60s and ’70s, the housing project was designed to be a city within a city with a network of tower blocks where each level was designated for a specific purpose.
In an interview with THE FACE, Lyna speaks on how her family formed part of the South-East Asian community who lived and worked on the complex’s south side in Tokyo Tower. “We had this tiny apartment, and I shared a bedroom with five, six other cousins. It was the only time I lived in an apartment block. I wanted to talk about what the environment was like, the criss-cross of different people, strangers that you see every day that sort of became your neighbour,” she said. And while the previous collection L22.1 ‘Avenue D’Ivry’ was a “collection of opposites,” the latest L22.2 collection draws from shared experiences, camaraderie, and a sense of tribe.
Making its debut back on August 26th with 100 pairs of the adidas SFTM-001 Shadowturf sneaker, Sydney-siders will be lucky enough to get their hands on the full adidas x Song for the Mute collection as it launches on September 23rd at the brand’s concept store at 17 Oxford St, Paddington, Sydney. The range will also launch online, and includes more colourways of the sought-after SFTM-001 Shadowturf and multiple apparel pieces found in the full lookbook featured below.
The organic colour palette used on the sneaker finds its way onto the apparel collection with the outdoor-inspired silhouette and its use of mesh and leather clearly influencing the aesthetic throughout the lookbook. We particularly love the choice of colour on the tracksuit pants, t-shirts, and long sleeves with distressed details.
The collection retails exclusively in Song For The Mute’s immersive concept store at 17 Oxford St, Paddington, Sydney from the 23rd and online at songforthemute.com. Prices for the collection range from $210 – $400 AUD.
