The Sony Cyber Shot HX99 High Zoom Camera may be tiny, but it’s ability to zoom in is most definitely not. The camera only weighs 8.54 ounces, which is ridiculous even for a dedicated point-and-shoot. Despite its diminutive size, the HX99 has a 28x optical zoom—that will let you get up nice and tight on any shot.
The HX99 has a 24-720mm fixed lens and an 18.2-megapixel ½.3-inch CMOS sensor. It’s capable of shooting 4K video and uses a BIONZ X image processor. It can pound out 10 fps continuous shooting, and has an ISO range of 80-12800. The 180-degree tilting touchscreen lets you view what your selfie will look like as you take the picture. And it’s smart.
The HX99 utilizes Sony’s Fast Intelligent AF and Eye AF systems to lock onto subjects and keep them in focus. The camera can acquire focus in as little as 0.09 seconds, so capturing those action shots will be easy. You can even use the LCD screen for touch focus and shutter. Plus, it has Optical SteadyShot image stabilization.
When it comes to facing down the stiff competition offered by smartphones, dedicated cameras need to be able to up the ante. The HX99 is well-enough equipped that it is up to the task.
