‘Redesigned from the Inside Out’ – Meta Unveils Stunning Quest 3 VR Headset

The VR space is about to get more “real” as Meta has officially announced the Quest 3 VR headset, the company’s next-generation virtual and mixed reality headset that has been completely “redesigned from the inside out.” Serving as the successor to the Quest 2, this new and upcoming headset will launch sometime this Spring (Fall in America), with Mark Zuckerberg teasing the headset via an Instagram post. With Apple gearing up to reveal its very own mixed-reality headset, Meta’s move to announce the Quest 3 couldn’t have come at a better time. The new headset features some significant design and performance improvements as well as a breakthrough Meta Reality technology “that lets you blend virtual elements into the physical world around you.”

Compared to its predecessor, the Quest 3 boasts a sleeker and far more comfortable design, featuring a “40 per cent slimmer optic profile” (excluding its foam facial interface). Meta says it has combined its “highest-resolution display and pancake optics” in this new headset, enhancing the visual quality of the content like never before. The Quest 3 will also come equipped with the latest next-generation Snapdragon chip, making it the first headset to possess this technology. With this new Snapdragon chipset, the Quest 3 will deliver over double the graphical performance of the previous generation Snapdragon GPU found in the Quest 2. As a result, we can expect smoother performance and much more precise details in immersive games.

Meta says the new mixed reality headset will “seamlessly blend your physical world with the virtual one by intelligently understanding and responding to objects in your physical space and allowing you to navigate that space in natural, intuitive ways that were nearly impossible before.” The Quest 3 headset introduces an array of exciting features, including high-fidelity colour passthrough, innovative machine-learning capabilities, and spatial understanding. These advancements allow users to seamlessly interact with virtual content while remaining connected to the physical world, opening up boundless possibilities for exploration. Furthermore, Meta has made significant improvements to the Touch Plus controllers of the Quest 3 to enhance the overall user experience.

These controllers now sport a sleek and ergonomic form factor, ensuring a comfortable and intuitive gameplay experience. Meta has also eliminated the outer tracking rings from the controllers, resulting in a more organic integration with your hands and a reduced physical footprint. The new controllers even feature TruTouch haptics, providing a heightened sense of touch and immersion. Additionally, they support hand tracking right out of the box, allowing you to explore virtual environments without the need for controllers. These even have Direct Touch technology, allowing you to interact with virtual objects using only your hands, unlocking a whole new level of lifelike interaction.

The Quest 3 headset ensures backward compatibility with Quest 2’s games, letting users enjoy a vast library of over “500 VR games, apps, and experiences.” Moreover, Meta has exciting plans for the future, with a promise of unveiling “more exciting new VR and MR titles” during the headset’s launch. The base 128GB version of the Meta Quest 3 is priced at USD$499 (AUD $829.99), and the company will be offering “an additional storage option for those who want more space”, although the specific pricing for this option has not been disclosed at this time.
