New TMNT Video Game Promises to Go ‘God of War’ Mode

Our beloved half-shell heroes are getting a new video game adaptation that promises to be unlike any of the previous ones. According to Polygon, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game is in the works, based on the 2020 graphic novel series The Last Ronin. Unlike the upbeat and lighthearted tone of previous games, this one will stay true to the darker, grittier tone of the comic book.

For the uninitiated, The Last Ronin is five-issue miniseries written by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, Tom Waltz, and Andy Kuhn, with art from Kuhn and Ben Bates. The comic is a super gloomy and dark take on our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, taking place in a post-apocalyptic New York City where a lone surviving turtle (we obviously won’t tell you who it is) attempts to get revenge for the death of his brothers.

During a recent interview with Polygon, Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global confirmed the big news and even shared a few tidbits surrounding the game. Rosen revealed that the upcoming The Last Ronin video game adaptation will introduce a darker tone similar to the comic and even went on to analogize the experience to the new God of War games. Judging by his comments, it seems the game will be a AAA experience featuring a ton of hardcore violence, blood and all the other gory goodness.

Unlike other TMNT games, The Last Ronin will be a single-player game, although Rosen teased that players might be able to control other characters in certain flashback sequences. The game is said to mostly revolve around survival and will target a more mature audience. Rosen even expressed there are possibilities for multiple TMNT games targeted at both young and more mature age groups, and that Paramount can take “multiple approaches (to the franchise), and not dial back to make the game something it shouldn’t be.”

It’s currently unknown which studio is involved with video game adaptation; however, Rosen did mention that the company has managed to team up with a suitable partner to adapt The Last Ronin into an ambitious AAA title. The game’s release is said to be probably a “few years off,” which doesn’t seem surprising, considering the graphic novel came out just last year.

Chances are that the game might still be in the early concept phases and the developers might still be working on the story bits. Although, nothing can be said for certain. More information surrounding the upcoming game as well as other Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video games is said to drop in the coming months or years.
