The Future of the Kingsman Franchise

As The King’s Man isn’t part of the official trilogy, it does not star Colin Firth or Taron Egerton. However, don’t take that to mean the story of Harry Hart (Firth) and Eggsy (Egerton) don’t come to a close. Reports have suggested that an official Kingsman 3 will arrive somewhere down the road.

In fact, it’s been reported that director Matthew Vaughn is so enamoured with this universe that he’ll continue to expand upon it by way of crossover films and spin-offs. That includes a potential movie about Statesman Tequila, who was introduced in the second film and played by Channing Tatum. In 2018, Vaughn also announced that he was developing an eight-hour Kingsman TV series, suggesting that there may well be an entire KCU in the works, however, nothing has been confirmed.

Since before he began shooting The Golden Circle, Matthew Vaughn was already planning the next Kingsman movie Currently known as Kingsman 3—though surely that will change at some point—it will mark “the conclusion of the Harry Hart-Eggsy relationship,” according to Vaughn.

“The next movie is what happens to these characters,” Vaughn said. “They’re definitely not going to be doing what you’ve seen them do before…People will either freak out in a good way, or freak out in a bad way, but they will freak out…we’re literally finishing the script off as I speak—but they go on a journey that, if anyone sees it coming, then I’ll give up.”

Eggsy and Harry Hart

In an interview with Comicbook, Vaughn revealed the details of the long-awaited Kingsman 3, a continuation of the over-the-top espionage thriller. Turns out, fans will be getting the send-off they’ve been asking for. Kingsman 3 will reportedly mark a fitting farewell to the classic Eggys/Harry Hart storyline that put the gentleman spies on the map.

“We’re all set to go,’ Vaughn said. ‘We start filming in September.” The admission makes good on previous reports that the new film will revisit the relationship that sparked the original. Debuting in 2014, the spy movie put an interesting twist on the genre, revitalising a tired category overrun with cliches. It was a runaway hit upon release and was immediately followed by its Golden Circle sequel in 2017, however, many reviews suggest it failed to capture the magic of the first film. Kingsman 3 is set to fix that.

According to Taron Egerton, Kingsman 3 and its premise will be “really neat.” He’s previously expressed a desire to see the story of Eggsy and Harry Hart come to a close, saying, “I would like to do one more because frankly, I’d like to say goodbye to him in a befitting way and to finish the trilogy. All good things come to an end. It was always imagined as a trilogy and I think it’d be great to finish the story off because I’ve loved playing the character.”

“I’m really not allowed to say anything, but there is a script,” Egerton revealed in a 2019 interview. “It’s a really neat idea. That plan, at the moment, is that we’d like to do another one, one more time.” The lead actor went on to explain that he’d like to return to the role at least one more time so he could bid farewell to Eggsy ‘in proper fashion’.

Ultimately, we don’t know much about the plot for Kingsman 3, which is pretty much par for the course. After all, it wouldn’t be much of a spy film if it gave everything away beforehand. Meanwhile, it’s been rumoured that key actors from The Golden Circle will return, namely Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges. That’s in addition to the reported movie about Tequila (Tatum), which may or may not happen.

There’s also early speculation as to whether the third Kingsman movie will pull more of its content from Mark Millar’s original comic book series. If the previous two instalments are anything to go by, Vaughn will cap off the trilogy by continuing to put his own spin on the material. Here’s hoping he does a slightly better job than he did with The Golden Circle, which was entertaining in its own right, but not quite as thrilling and unique as the first Kingsman, in our opinion.
