Following the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant back in January, Nike is expected to continue the NBA legend’s legacy with a new wave of Nike Zoom Kobe 5 shoes, this time in Lakers-inspired colours.
The Nike Kobe 5 in Lakers colours has been seen on the court with baller Anthony Davis wearing a pair recently during the NBA All-Star weekend in Chicago. Nike has yet to officially unveil the new shoes, although sneaker websites are suggesting they will become available for purchase March 26.
Footwear News points out that this was the sneaker Bryant wore in 2010 when he captured his fifth NBA championship against the Boston Celtics. Nike reintroduced the silhouette late last year as part of the Protro line which gives classic footwear modern upgrades while maintaining the original style.
The Nike Kobe 5 features the Lakers’ purple on the vamp, toe and upper, with black detailing outlined in Lakers’ gold. The Lakers’ initials are printed on the insole while Bryant’s signature is printed on the heel.
This is set to be the first Kobe-themed release following the helicopter crash that cost the lives of Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven others on January 26. A memorial service for Bryant was held earlier this week where Bryant’s wife Vanessa and NBA legends Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal paid tribute to those who lost their lives. The memorial was recorded and shared online for everyone who couldn’t attend.
