Apple iPhone 13 Release Date and Specs

At long last, the Apple iPhone 13 has been revealed. In a blockbuster showcase held overnight, the tech giant unveiled a raft of new products, kicking off with a flagship new smartphone that promises a host of next-gen features and a longer battery life. Not content with simply dropping the iPhone, however, Apple went ham, showing off not one, but four variations. Get ready for the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. The era of iPhone continues.

Representing the ‘most advanced’ iPhone lineup ever released, the 13 takes things up a notch. The Pro and Pro Max cop a new Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion, along with a massive leap in battery life and the A15 Bionic, the fastest chip in a smartphone. The more budget-friendly (only slightly) iPhone 13 and 13 mini have opted for a sleeker design and improved low light camera functionality, finally putting an end to those grainy late-night snaps.

“Our customers rely on iPhone every day, which is why we’ve made iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini more powerful, more capable, and more fun to use,” Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing said. “Both phones have beautiful designs, industry-leading performance, and advanced camera systems with impressive computational photography features, all with incredible durability, water resistance, and a big jump in battery life to ensure customers can depend on their iPhone when they need it. All of this, tightly integrated with iOS 15 and with privacy built in, make iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini an unbeatable choice.”

iPhone 13 and 13 mini

Kicking off the new lineup was the Apple iPhone 13 and 13 mini. Featuring a familiar design, the new releases cop an advanced dual-camera system, super-fast performance and power efficiency and a brighter Super Retina XDR display. Here’s what you need to know.

Design

The standard and streamlined version of the new smartphone arrives with a slightly different aesthetic than we’re used to seeing. According to Apple, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have been redesigned on the inside and out to feature a durable flat-edge design and aluminium frame.

In terms of display, the two standard editions receive an improved Super Retina XDR OLED display set to deliver a vastly increased contrast ratio for true blacks. The tech giant confirmed that these displays will provide a 28% increase in max outdoor brightness at 800 nits, with higher peak brightness for HDR content like photos and videos at 1200 nits, all while being more power-efficient. Better still, the 6.1-inch and 5.4-inch displays feature Ceramic Shield on the front, a material exclusive to iPhone that Apple claims is tougher than any smartphone glass. Considering the long-held concerns over the shattered iPhone display, it’s a welcomed addition.

Camera

Where Apple is claiming the biggest improvements are in the camera capabilities. Both the iPhone 13 and 13 mini cop a redesigned rear camera layout with diagonally arranged lenses to provide an ‘advanced dual-camera system’. Apple is claiming the improvements will offer the most advanced dual-camera system ever seen in iPhone, thanks to advancements in hardware and computational photography.

Specifically, the new Wide camera with 1.7 µm pixels comes with the biggest sensor ever in an iPhone dual-camera system, capable of gathering 47 per cent more light. Apple has also added the Sensor-shift OIS technology introduced in iPhone 12 Pro Max to stabilise the sensor instead of the lens.

Apple is also plugging an innovation known as ‘Cinematic Mode’ which provides depth effect with automatic focus changes to allow users to capture cinema-style moments. The focus can even be changed during and after capture, with the users able to adjust the level of bokeh in the Photos app and iMovie for iOS. Enabled by A15 Bionic and advanced machine learning algorithms, Cinematic mode also records in Dolby Vision HDR, which is just insane. Both models also offer HDR video recording with Dolby Vision — from capture to editing and sharing — now supported for 4K up to 60 fps on all cameras.

Performance

The big news is that the A15 Bionic is steering the ship this time around. Apple’s most powerful chip uses 5-nanometre technology and has nearly 15 billion transistors to tackle demanding tasks. While that might not mean much to the average user, it’s a major boost for everyday use. Apple says the new 6-core CPU comes with two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, making it is up to 50 per cent faster than the competition, the fastest in any smartphone.

“The new 16-core Neural Engine is capable of 15.8 trillion operations per second, enabling even faster machine learning computations for third-party app experiences, as well as features like Live Text in Camera with iOS 15,” Apple said. “Major advancements to the next-generation ISP, paired with computational photography and powerful camera hardware, combine to create the new dual-camera system.”

Apple iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max

Stepping things up even further, Apple also revealed the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Pushing the adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, the flagship releases also copped a camera upgrade, new computational photography features, end-to-end pro workflows in Dolby Vision, and for the first time, ProRes, only available on iPhone. Here’s what you need to know.

“iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max make up our most pro iPhone lineup ever with the biggest advancement for our camera system, the best battery life ever in an iPhone, and the fastest performance of any smartphone, setting a new standard for iPhone and enabling incredible experiences never before possible,” Joswiak said. “The new pro camera system offers even more pro photography capabilities like improved telephoto zoom, macro photography, Photographic Styles, Cinematic mode, as well as ProRes and Dolby Vision video. The Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion is our best display ever; it intelligently responds to the content on your screen, offers fantastic graphics performance, and is perfect for any viewing experience.”

Design & Display

Once again, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max up the display with a new Super Retina XDR with ProMotion, which supports an adaptive refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz. The two phones come in both 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes, respectively, with the intelligent new display leveraging a more efficient OLED panel, new display engine of A15 Bionic, faster GPU performance and an always-on touch coprocessor.

“This is the brightest display ever on iPhone with up to 25 per cent higher max outdoor brightness, at 1000 nits, so users will experience amazing resolution, colour, and contrast whether casually scrolling through the web or watching HDR videos,” Apple said.

Camera

For the Apple iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, Apple went hard with the camera upgrade. The tech company is calling this the ‘most advanced cameras ever seen on iPhone’ and it’s hard to argue with the specs. Apple has added new sensors and lenses for all three rear cameras, optimised to work with iOS 15 and powered by the new image signal processor (ISP) in A15 Bionic. All that leads to improved noise reduction and tone mapping, giving the iPhone 13 Pro lineup a far stronger camera set-up.

Diving a little deeper, the all-new Wide camera cops the same large sensor as its standard stablemates, alongside a larger ƒ/1.5 aperture. There is also a new lens design, autofocus capability for the first time in the Ultra Wide on iPhone, and advanced software to unlock macro photography, a first for iPhone.

“Users can capture sharp, stunning images where objects appear larger than life, magnifying subjects with a minimum focus distance of 2 centimetres,” Apple said. “Macro also extends to video including Slo-mo and Time-lapse. iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max also boast a new 77 mm Telephoto camera, allowing users to get closer to their subjects while recording video and achieve even more classically framed portraits, offering 3x optical zoom for a total 6x optical zoom range on the camera system.”

The new additions also bolster video, with the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max to score ProRes, an advanced video codec used widely as the final delivery format for commercials, feature films, and broadcasts, to offer higher colour fidelity and less compression.

“This powerful new pro workflow is enabled by the new camera hardware, advanced video encoders and decoders in A15 Bionic, and flash storage pipeline. iPhone is the only smartphone in the world to provide an end-to-end workflow — capture, edit, and share in Dolby Vision or ProRes.”

Performance

Like the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, the Pro and Pro Max score the A15 Bionic chip for processing, greatly upping the overall performance. According to Apple, the new 16-core Neural Engine capable of 15.8 trillion operations per second enables even faster machine learning computations for third-party app experiences, as well as features like Live Text in Camera with iOS 15. Major advancements to the next-generation ISP also provide improved noise reduction and tone mapping.

Additionally, the iPhone 13 Pro will last up to one and a half hours longer in a day than iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max will last up to two and a half hours longer in a day than iPhone 12 Pro Max.
