The answer we’ve all been waiting for! Apple has officially answered the single biggest question hanging over its first foldable smartphone: how will the inner display hold up over years of daily folding and unfolding? By detailing its long-term durability strategy for the upcoming iPhone Duo (priced from AUD$3,499 for the 256GB base model up to AUD$5,899 for 2TB), the Cupertino brand confirmed that the 7.6-inch flexible panel features a dedicated nano-texture cover layer that can be removed and replaced if it sustains wear over time, for as little as USD$19 (AUD$29).

It’s an approach that differs from current market alternatives. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Google Pixel Fold utilise permanent structural screen protectors that cannot be removed without risking permanent damage to the panel. Designing a consumable outer layer provides peace of mind to owners, and with pre-orders opening in two weeks on Friday, 16 October 2026 at 11 p.m., it will make all the difference.

Vice President of Hardware Engineering Kate Bergeron recently confirmed the capability in an interview with content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi. We’re examining how this replaceable cover layer integrates with the grade 5 titanium chassis, what it costs to replace under warranty, and when Australian buyers can secure the device below.

Engineering a Replaceable Solution

Officially, the internal folding display of the iPhone Duo is shielded by a specialised nano-texture cover layer. This outer film sits directly above the delicate inner screen and is designed specifically to minimise the visual impact of the centre crease. The display finish also reduces glare, enhancing legibility alongside the panel’s 3,000-nit peak brightness capability.

As we observed during our recent hands-on crease test, the nano-texture finish renders the centre crease “pretty much imperceptible” when the display is illuminated. The crease is only slightly visible when the screen is powered off and viewed from an angle.

During the recent interview, Bergeron noted that the engineering team dedicated significant resources to ensure the layer lasts as long as possible under daily folding stress. However, the true advantage lies in its modularity. If the screen covering sustains scratches or the centre crease becomes too prominent, the film can simply be removed and swapped for a fresh one.

“It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one,” Bergeron said.

Repair Process and Hardware Context

While the cover layer is designed to be peeled off, the replacement process is not intended as a do-it-yourself project. Customers will need to visit a physical Apple Store to have the fresh nano-texture film professionally applied.

To access reduced service fees, buyers can protect the device with AppleCare+, priced at AUD$14.49 per month or AUD$144.99 per year. Alternatively, Apple’s new multi-device AppleCare One plan covers up to three products starting at AUD$29.99 per month.

Locally, Apple has confirmed the following replacement and repair service fees for enrolled members:

  • Cover layer replacement: AUD$29
  • Inner display damage: AUD$149
  • Front display damage: AUD$45
  • Back glass damage: AUD$45
  • Theft and loss replacement: AUD$229
  • Battery service: AUD$0 (Complimentary when capacity drops below 80 per cent)

Should the inner display panel sustain physical damage beyond the outer film, AppleCare+ members will incur a repair fee of AUD$149. Standard front display and back glass repairs incur a fee of AUD$45, while battery servicing is complimentary for enrolled devices. The out-of-warranty replacement costs remain undisclosed.
