‘Extraction 3’ Confirmed: Chris Hemsworth Returning

While we already knew Netflix’s massively successful action thriller Extraction franchise would be returning for a third round, thanks to last year’s announcement at Netflix’s Tudum Event, we now finally have some solid updates about the film. During a recent interview with Total Film, producers Joe and Anthony Russo confirmed that the work on Extraction 3 has officially begun and the development is moving forward.

‘Extraction 3’ Production Update

The Russo brothers told the outlet that development is in progress for Extraction 3 with the director of the first two films, Sam Hargrave, returning to direct and Chris Hemsworth set to reprise his role as the former Australian SASR operator turned black ops mercenary. “Yeah, we’re developing it at the moment, figuring out Chris’s schedule,” Joe Russo told Total Film.

“Sam Hargrave is back directing. It’s an interesting franchise because he’s a very emotionally wounded character, so there’s good storytelling there, I think, in respect to his backstory, and, you know, his relationship to violence is one that’s built around self-loathing and guilt. And so, it adds a lot of texture, I think, which allows us to tell more stories about him.”

Plot Rumours

Keeping details under wraps, the duo refrained from revealing more about the film, which makes sense given its early stages. While no official plot details have been revealed, Extraction 3 will likely see Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake back in action for yet another extraction mission, this time working for Idris Elba’s mysterious Alcott as hinted at the end of the last film, where Elba offers Rake and Nik freedom in exchange for completing a mission.

What We Think Extraction 3 Will Be About

While little is known about the new instalment, we do have some predictions about the plot based on the outcome of the second film. Below, we’ve detailed what we think Extraction 3 will be about, but be warned; there are spoilers for the second film.

In the 2023 sequel, Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake manages to execute a flawless prison break, rescuing his wife’s sister and her two children from the clutches of a vicious Georgian mob boss named Davit Radiani, killing him in the process. Davit’s death sends his brother Zurab into a flying rage, tearing through Vienna on a mission to avenge the murder. Thankfully, Austrian police break in and arrest Zurab and his partner Nik, putting an end to chase.

From there, Rake is offered a job by Elba’s character in exchange for his freedom but the film stops short of revealing what it is. Extraction 3 will clearly follow that task and it’s likely that Rake and Nik will be forced to team up, in a twist of fate that pairs the opposing hulks together.

Extraction Franchise Success

The Extraction franchise has proven to be a big win for both Netflix and producers Joe and Anthony Russo. The first film skyrocketed to become Netflix’s most-watched original film at the time, accumulating a remarkable 99 million hours of watch time within just 28 days of its debut. Building on this triumph, the sequel, Extraction 2, claimed the title of the most-watched movie on Netflix in Australia. So it’s hardly any surprise that Netflix and the Russo brothers are eager to tell more stories and expand the universe by introducing new characters and storylines.

Russon Brothers x Star Wars

Joe Russo, along with his brother Anthony, not only produced both Extraction and Extraction 2 but also wrote the screenplays for these films. While there were doubts as to whether Joe would return for Extraction 3, he confirmed that he would be back. Production for the upcoming movie will kick off once everyone’s schedules align. Looking beyond Extraction, the Russo brothers have ambitious plans and set their sights on building a cinematic universe as captivating as Star Wars, by focusing on “original storytelling and new ideas.”

“The intention is that we want to build our own Star Wars. For us, it’s all about the focus on original storytelling and new ideas,” Joe Russo told Total Film. “If anything, there’s been too much. I mean, I think you could argue we’re in a rut of repetitive storytelling and potential franchise abuse. So, at a certain point, I think the audience is craving new ideas and new stories. And that’s where all of our focus is going post-Marvel.”

Netflix’s Extraction 3 currently has no release date.
