New ‘Suits’ Spin-Off Will Take Hollywood Heavyweights to Court

We finally have some juicy details about the upcoming Suits spin-off, first confirmed in development late last year by NBCUniversal and series creator Aaron Korsh. According to exclusive intel from Hollywood insider newsletter Puck, the new TV series will take us inside the cutthroat world of a high-powered Los Angeles entertainment law firm, following a young lawyer named Erica, described as being a “30s, Black, SoCal native, and Harvard law alum. She’s jockeying to be made Head of Entertainment. She’s great at closing clients but struggles elsewhere. Smarter than everyone.”

While more details surrounding the upcoming Suits spin-off are still awaited, Puck reported that the casting is expected to kick off pretty soon. Fans who have followed Suits will immediately recognize parallels between this new character and Meghan Markle’s Rachel Zane, a Pearson Hardman paralegal. As you might remember, Markle’s Rachel was equally ambitious to scale the legal ladder and forge her own identity outside the shadow of her privileged family.

While the parallels are somewhat undeniable, Markle isn’t involved in the new Suits spinoff. As reported by Variety, Beatrice Springborn, president of Universal International Studios, mentioned to Content London that the upcoming show will have a vibe similar to its predecessor and feature “good looking people” just like the original did. Beatrice further added that the spin-off has a “fun and happy” tone.

“It is amazing looking people in great clothes, but at the core of it you can’t have a show that’s successful with just that,” Springborn said. “It has to have great storytelling and great character work. So how do you do something that can be ongoing, have a gloss to it, and be a continuing series that everyone wants?”

Springborn further referred to the show as Suits LA, though it’s unclear if this is the working title or an official one. The producer also noted that it’s set during the same period as Suits, which could theoretically open the door to multiple cameos. As of now, there’s no word on the release date, plot synopsis, or cast details and it’s unclear how far along this new Suits spin-off is in development.

However, given how things are moving, the series might enter into production soon but we’ll need to wait for an official announcement.
