Ressence’s Futuristic Type 8 Now Comes In Nature’s Favourite Colour

Whilst the politicians debate how green the planet’s future will be, fans of quirky timepieces can rest assured that the future of minimalist watches is definitely green. A wonderful sage green. That’s certainly the impression we get from Ressence’s latest iteration of its deceptively simple Type 8. It’s the sixth watch to be created by the brand and blends its unique take on minimalism with a series of exciting watchmaking innovations. The new Sage Green Type 8 boasts a soft and elegant aesthetic and lightweight titanium construction. It’s also the brand’s most affordable model yet, making it an ideal place to start with the Belgium-based watchmaker.

Fans of cutting-edge horology usually focus on the big names of Swiss watchmaking, so it might come as a surprise to find that such an innovative watch comes from the home of the world’s diamond trade, Antwerp. But don’t worry, this is no gem-encrusted eye-sore. It’s the brand’s purest design and a great example of founder Benoît Mintien’s ethos, to use yesterday’s expertise and today’s technology to create watches for tomorrow.

The Ressence Type 8 debuted last year in Cobalt blue and features a highly legible dial that takes a little explaining. Speaking of the dial, Mintien states “You cannot possibly subtract anything more from it”. And he means that – he didn’t even leave the watch with hands. Instead, the Type 8 utilises a domed rotating dial forged from titanium that indicates the minutes and a smaller one that does the same for the hours. The theory is that this ever-changing dial can be viewed from any angle.

This unusual time-keeping set-up is housed in a Grade 5 Titanium case with a diameter of just under 43mm. The lightweight case and dial mean that at 42g the Type 8 is Ressence’s lightest watch. The slim profile and use of titanium aid with what the brand terms ‘ergonomic utility’. And this is where we see the next unique feature – the Type 8 doesn’t have a traditional crown. Instead, the whole case back can be rotated to set the time and wind the mechanical movement. This is achieved through a customised ETA movement with a 36-hour power reserve.

This new variation of the Type 8 sports a rich sage green dial that offers a natural aesthetic. It’s also ridiculously lightweight and is designed to be super comfortable and eye-catching. Above all, it’s built to tell the time without the distraction of numerals or watch hands.
