a6400 takes features from Sony’s full-frame lineup and adds them to a compact, 24.2-megapixel APS-C camera. Sony says a6400 boasts the world’s fastest autofocus, coming in at 0.02 seconds while introducing advanced “Real-time Eye AF” and “Real-time Tracking” capabilities. The camera also offers high-speed shooting up to 11 fps, a new-generation processing engine for excellent image quality, 4K video recording and a 180-degree tiltable LCD touch screen.
Sony’s latest compact camera should satisfy everyone from professionals to everyday vloggers. The a6400 will be available in Australia from February 2019 for $1,499. a6400 will also be offered as a kit with the 16-50mm F3.5 – 5.6 lens for $1,699.
The “Real-time Eye AF” feature uses AI-based object recognition to detect and process in real time, resulting in improved accuracy, speed and tracking.
When in AF-C or AF-A mode, users can select the left or right eye of a subject as the focus point. This new technology frees the photographer to focus on composition. Eye AF support for animals will be added later in 2019 via a software update.
As a video camera, a6400 offers Quad Full HD resolution recording with full pixel readout. Focusing is fast and stable thanks to the upgraded Fast Hybrid AF technology, which keeps the subject in constant smooth focus no matter the scene even if an object crosses in front of the camera.
For time-lapse recording, the camera features built-in interval recording that can be set anywhere between 1 and 60 seconds, with a total number of shots from 1 to 9999. Tracking sensitivity can be adjusted to “High”, “Mid” or “Low” allowing reduced changes in exposure.
The 180-degree tiltable, LCD touchscreen has 921k-dots of resolution, making it simple and effective for framing selfies and self-video capture. There’s also an XGA OLED Tru-finder viewfinder, extensive customisation available with 89 functions assignable to 8 custom keys and enhanced menu usability.
a6400 is built with a tough magnesium alloy that is dust and moisture resistant and has an extremely durable shutter.
