Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren Join ‘Yellowstone’ Prequel ‘1932’

As our world becomes increasingly automated and digital, it seems city slickers can’t get enough of the cowboy life. So much so that Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone-verse is further expanding, with streaming platform Paramount+ announcing a new chapter titled 1932. Bridging the gap between 1883 and Yellowstone, the new origin story will feature Academy Award winner Helen Mirren and Acadamy Award nominee Harrison Ford. The legendary pairing will have big shoes to fill, with Yellowstone breaking audience records for cable, only to be overshadowed by the performance of 1883, which became the most-watched series on Paramount+ globally.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, 1932 introduces fans to a new generation of the Dutton family. The series will explore the hardships of the early 20th century, when historic drought, pandemics, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression tormented the Mountain West, and the Duttons who inhabit the region. We can also expect to see the Duttons continue to fight for their land and legacy, with 1932 providing a new time period to further traverse the creator’s vision.

Chris McCarthy, President and CEO of ViacomCBS Media Networks and MTV Entertainment Studios said “With the brilliant mind and gifted storytelling of Taylor Sheridan, we have created an entirely new world to explore with 1883 while expanding Yellowstone, and with 1932 we will open up a new chapter in this rapidly growing universe”.

Outside of the latest announced prequel, Sheridan’s sordid exploration of the Dutton family is rapidly growing. The Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill-led 1883 is set to be renewed for another season, while further spinoff, 6666 is currently in development. But perhaps the most interesting announcement of all is that Duttons aren’t the only family on Sheridan’s mind. The blossoming writer and creator has tapped Billy Bob Thornton for a new series entitled Land Man, alongside the recently unveiled news of the David Oyelowo-led Bass Reeves, the Sylvester Stallone-fronted Tulsa King; Zoe Saldaña’s Liones, and the Jeremy Renner drama Mayor of Kingstown.

Preparing the perfect Christmas gift for fans, MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions said in a press statement to expect 1932 in December of this year. It’s yet to be determined how far into production they are, but Sheridan’s widely respected work ethic should put any deadline worries to rest. With the filming of Yellowstone season 5 recently kicking off, it’s going to be a busy back end of the year for everyone involved. 1932 is produced in-house by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios and Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch Productions, with executive producers Sheridan, John Linson, Art Linson, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari and Ben Richardson on board for the prequel.
