We’re here, we made it. Despite everything the last four weeks threw at us, we persevered and now there’s new light at the end of the tunnel. Not, not a lockdown free world, simply a new haul of streaming content to fill in the blank spaces in our cultural calendar. Kicking things off down under, the shows, series and movies that are new on Stan Australia actually look pretty good, which is lucky because we’ve got absolutely nothing going on. Strap in and stream on, here’s what’s new on Stan in August 2021.

Dr Death
Finally, some good gory content. Based on Wondery’s hit podcast, Dr. Death is the terrifying true crime story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch. Joshua Jackson plays the titular role of the flourishing neurosurgeon who unexpectedly turns evil. When patients enter his operating room for complex but routine spinal surgeries and leave permanently maimed, Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater get on the case. Chilling.

Chapelwaite
Based on Stephen King’s 1978 short story Jerusalem’s Lot, Chapelwaite looks to be a wild ride. It stars Oscar-winner Adrien Brody as Charles Boone, a captain who chooses to relocate his family of three children to his ancestral home in the small, seemingly sleepy town of Preacher’s Corners, Maine after his wife dies at sea. Insert a boatload of family secrets and glooming colour-grading in trademark spooky style.

Heels
Small town pro-wrestling. There’s literally nothing else we need to say, but nevertheless, we’ll regale you. This new Stan show follows the men and women who chase their dreams inside the ring. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals war over their late father’s legacy. Most interestingly, it touches on the dynamic between good and evil in the characters they play. It’s no D-Generation X but Heels still looks top-rope good.

Power Book III: Raising Kanan
Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson’s all-badass series returns for another incarnation, and this one looks good. Set in South Jamaica, Queens in 1991, Power Book III: Raising Kanan is the prequel to the original Power series. This time around it is a sprawling family drama that revolves around the coming of age of Kanan Stark, Ghost and Tommy’s mentor, partner and adversary, who ultimately dies in a hail of gunfire in the eighth episode of the penultimate season of Power.

The L Word: Generation Q – Season 2
The spinoff returns. Based on the groundbreaking drama series The L Word, Generation Q tackles new issues, identity crises and some erotic fruit play.

The Godfather of Harlem – Season 2
This show is sick. Inspired by the true story of crime boss Bumpy Johnson, who in the early 1960’s, returns home from ten years in prison and must fight to regain control of the streets he once ruled. Forest Whitaker’s breathtaking performance as the returned street soldier is brutal and unforgiving, matched only by the addition of some powerhouse stars. Daredevil‘s Vincent D’Onofrio, Breaking Bad‘s Giancarlo Esposito and Selma‘s Nigel Thatch come close to stealing the show.

Black Monday
Don Cheadle and Regina Hall team up for this Wall Street trading series. Exploring the stories of the Jammer Group firm in the year leading up to Oct. 19, 1987, viewers watch the real-life global stock market crash play out in real time.

Blingspotting
Picking up six months after the film, the Blingspotting series centres on Ashley. Nipping at the heels of middle-class life in Oakland, Ashley’s partner Miles is suddenly incarcerated, leaving her to navigate a chaotic and humorous existential crisis when she is forced to move in with Miles’ mother and half-sister.

Miracle Workers – Season 3
If you haven’t watched this one yet, you’re in for a treat. An unexpected hit, Miracle Workers sees cult favourites Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi at their absolute best. The third season of the acclaimed anthology comedy series transports the cast to America’s Old West. Set in the year 1844, the new season will follow an idealistic small-town preacher (Radcliffe) who teams up with a wanted outlaw (Buscemi) and an adventurous prairie wife (Viswanathan) to lead a wagon train west on the Oregon Trail across an American landscape. Hilarity ensues.

RuPaul Drag Race: All Stars – Season 6
The show everyone pretends not to love is back again. Season 6 of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars is pretty much a rinse and repeat of the past five, but my god is it watchable. And with names like Ginger Minj and Silky Nutmeg Ganache, how could you not tune in?

Survive The Night
If you told us in 2009 that Bruce Willis and Chad Michael Murray would be teaming up for an action flick, we’d be pumped. In 2021, not so much but still, some Bruce Willis is better than no Bruce Willis at all. Survive The Night follows two criminals who are involved in an attempted garage that goes terribly wrong. A trauma doctor is forced to operate on a wounded gunman as he and his family are held hostage by the man and his unhinged brother.

Remember way back when we said some Bruce Willis is better than no Bruce Willis? Turns out you can absolutely have too much Bruce Willis. In Stan’s second new flick from the action legend, an injured young woman must escape a pair of vicious killers who are after the only piece of evidence that can implicate them in a grisly murder: the bullet in her leg. Ridiculous? Yes, but it’s got Aussie golden girl Nicky Whelan so we’re in.

Dr. Death: The Undoctored Story
Probably the best thing to come out on Stan for a while, Dr. Death: The Undoctored Story is based on the real-life crimes of Dr Christopher Duntsch. A haunting documentary of the infamous neurosurgeon who was sentenced to life imprisonment after maiming, harming, or killing 33 patients, this new Stan series is brutal and bloody. This four-part docuseries offers audiences the chance to hear and see the whole story, told by the real people who survived it.

Murder at the Cottage: The Search for Justice for Sophie
“In 1996, two days before Christmas, TV producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier was brutally murdered at her holiday cottage in Schull, West Cork.” This new Stan documentary series takes viewers on a journey of the unsolved case that has haunted West Cork for almost 25 years. Netflix may have got their first, but nevertheless, the story is captivating.

My Name Is Ada Hegerberg is an all-access documentary film featuring Norwegian National Team and Olympique Lyonnais soccer star Ada Hegerberg. Explaining her story for the first time since stepping away from the World Cup, the Stan documentary charts her growth from small town to the best female soccer player in the world, and her wrenching decision and the resulting international controversy that followed.
