American fashion designer Rick Owens has officially released his collaboration with Australian personal grooming and home care house, Aesop. The collection is fairly minimalist in both form and function, with Owens lending his dark industrial sensibility to Aesop’s botanical blends. It is not as wild and provocative as most of Owen’s designs and collaborations, instead, this collection focus on drifting away from the fashion industry to create something different.
The Aesop x Rick Owens collection spans a range of Owen’s favourite Aesop’s signature products as well as creating new signature products. The collaboration includes a travel kit, candles as well as an all-new fragrance. According to Aesop: “What might first appear a contradiction is soon revealed as a story of shared philosophies … a desire for serenity, a dedication to simplicity and an appreciation of considerate, nonconformist design.”
The new travel kit features pocket-sized versions of the designer’s favourite Aesop products such as the Coriander Seed Body Cleanser, Resolute Hydrating Body Balm, Classic Shampoo and Classic Conditioner. The travel kit is swaddled in a cotton jersey wrap featuring an Owens-coded grosgrain strip. Designed to be worn as a bandana or wrist-wrap, it features a co-branded dual grosgrain strip, which is a signature of Owen’s work.
“I like to think that we both share a desire to be an option for those pursuing a gentle, carefully considered life,” Owens said. “I am not sure if it was my body responding positively to the alchemy of the unguents they produce or my head responding to the quiet and gentle aesthetics of their ethos as a company, but Aesop’s balms represented a soothing mood that I wanted to continue seamlessly throughout my home life and my travel life.”
The aromatic candles are available in three sizes and feature the Stoic Eau de Toilette scent. The candles are housed within ceramic vessels inspired by the sculptures of Constantin Brancusi and Dadaist Hans Arp. The collection debuts the brand new Stoic Eau de Toilette, which has been created by the perfumer Barnabé Fillion. It features spicy aromas of black pepper and coriander seed along with frankincense and patchouli.
The fragrance is accompanied by a string of ten porous ceramic beads to which the fragrance can be applied in order to increase longevity. The concept was proposed by Owens, who set out to create a ‘reassuring amulet’ which creates an intimate relationship between the fragrance and its wearer.
The collection launched on the 21st of March. It is available on Aesop’s website in addition to some Aesop and Rick Owens stores.
