Nike zoom vomero 5 in vast grey 2

The Nike Zoom Vomero 5 is Having its Salomon Moment

We might be riding the third wave of the Salomon hype train, but a little-known Nike silhouette is looking to rock the boat. First released in 2011, the Nike Zoom Vomero 5 is coming for the New Balance 9060, Salomon ACS Pro, and ASICS Gel Kayano 14 with an archival silhouette that brings all the Y2K retro-future vibes.

It doesn’t have the sneakerheads in a choke hold just yet, but Nike is still unloading the clip with a Doernbecher colourway that’s merely the first in what is going to be a long line of popular silhouettes.

While it’s only hitting the wider sneaker audience now, the rollout for the first Zoom Vomero 5 re-issues date back to 2019 with brands such as A-COLD-WALL* and even Drake himself rocking a pair of Vomero PEs on Stage in Paris. Coincidently, 2019 is the same year GQ gave the Salomon XT-6 sneaker of the year.

We still remember where we were when sneakerheads started cutting off the large protruding block on the heel of the A-COLD-WALL* pair. April of 2019 also saw the release of a personal favourite, the Zoom Vomero 5 SE SPs that gave us the first taste of things to come. The colourways were outlandish, with bright greens, blues, and a muted grey all over a reflective upper with contrasting tongue strips.

Prices for the older pairs began to skyrocket on the secondary market, but fast forward a few years and the Vomero is finally getting the general release colourways it deserves. September 2022 kicked off the onslaught of colourways with a neutral-toned ‘Oatmeal’ but we’ve seen everything from vast grey to brighter worn blue. The shoes may not have the celebrity endorsements needed to hit the mainstream just yet, but it took Salomon three years to get Rihanna in a pair of Maison Margiela MM6 x Salomon Cross Lows at the Super Bowl LVII.

This is a running shoe at heart, and even though its technology is outdated by today’s standards, it’s fundamentally designed for comfort and performance. You’ll find Zoom Air cushion units in the forefoot and heel, and although the need to connect your iPod through the Nike+ technology is a thing of the past, it’s durable and ready for big miles.

Keep an eye out for more Zoom Vomero 5 colourways to hit the shelves and this year in both men’s and women’s colourways. We already have our eyes on the Wheat Grass and Cacao Wow colourway, while the Doernbecher is already a sneaker of the year contender in our eyes.
