2024 Mini Cooper Electric Revealed, Cleaner Look Divides Purists

Mini has gone back to its roots with the new generation Electric hatch echoing the iconic original with its simple lines. The brand has removed some of the aggressive details seen in the current model and embraced a cleaner look.

Gone is the plastic cladding, replaced by angular lines and thinner wheel arches. The bonnet gets a pronounced look but the wider track along with short overhangs gives it a much more aggressive stance. It looks more compact and purposeful than the current generation while round headlamps along with a large grille remain as before.

We think the new daytime running lights give the car a sinister look while triangular LED lights at the back contribute to a wider stance. Two-tone paint choices and a variety of customisations continue to remain but the new look gets a thumbs up from us.

Inside, there’s the obvious leap towards digitisation with a digital instrument cluster while the round central stack gets a cleaner layout with a large touchscreen. Mini hasn’t given up on physical controls just yet and the new one continues to have them. That includes a toggle for the drive mode selection and a proper ignition key style starting procedure. Expect more funky detailing and a smattering of new colours inside also.

The new Mini Electric is faster and more efficient too with a 40kWh battery pack and a claimed range of 322km. There’s a faster Cooper S EV (pictured) that takes advantage of a larger 54kWh battery pack and a 402km range figure. With the electric version, Mini has also ramped up the performance potential with a tweaked steering and a tighter suspension set-up along with new driver aids.

Alongside the new Mini Cooper electric, the petrol will follow suit in the middle of 2024 with possibly a tweaked line-up of 1.5 and 2.0-litre engines. Although the focus seems to be on the EV version with a new platform and an aim to take on the likes of the Fiat 500e while also promising hot hatch performance within the canvas of an efficient electric car.
