  • Apple has launched the HomePod mini 2 with Siri AI integration.
  • The device features a new S10 chip for advanced computational audio.
  • A new Sound Glow interface pulses in sync with playing music.
  • Users can create a four-speaker surround setup with Apple TV 4K.
  • Australian pricing is AUD$229 with preorders from today, before availability from October 30.

The next generation of Apple smart audio is here, and it’s called the HomePod mini 2 (AUD$229). With this speaker, Apple has merged a familiar compact exterior with overhauled internal processing. Local pre-orders are open today ahead of the official retail release on Friday, 30 October.

This starting price of AUD$229 represents a notable AUD$80 increase over the original model’s AUD$149 launch price. However, the new device has been upgraded and features the Apple S10 processor to handle real-time computational audio and unlock Siri AI for on-device artificial intelligence, allowing the speaker to process Siri requests locally or via Private Cloud Compute.

Construction remains visually similar to the original fabric sphere, but the top panel introduces a custom Sound Glow finish. This interactive display replaces the static gradient found on the first-generation model, transforming the surface into a visual canvas. It pulses in real time to track bass and treble frequencies, generating a dynamic, colour-matched light experience based on the currently playing album artwork. For ambient listening, the interface can also trigger bespoke animations (such as falling rain) to visually match specific soundscapes. Let’s take a closer look!

Acoustic Performance and Hardware Integration

The internal architecture relies on the Apple S10 chip. This is the exact same silicon driving the Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 3. It manages real-time computational audio, optimising dynamic range and loudness across the 360-degree acoustic profile.

For home theatre setups, the HomePod mini 2 introduces multi-channel surround sound. Users can pair up to four speakers with a fourth-generation Apple TV 4K. The system automatically calibrates audio timing and levels based on physical room positioning. Additionally, the device functions as a seamless default output for Mac computers operating on Wi-Fi 6E.

“HomePod mini 2 brings together Siri AI, gorgeous new colours, and incredible audio,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Home Product Marketing. “With Siri AI, it understands you better than ever, drawing on personal context and broad world knowledge to make music discovery even richer. It fills a room with sound on its own, which gets even bigger in a stereo pair or with multiroom audio, and when paired with the new Apple TV 4K, it delivers our most immersive home theatre setup yet. And with just your voice, HomePod mini makes it easy to securely control your accessories and run automations across the connected home.”

Siri AI and Smart Home Capabilities

Software functionality relies on the upcoming Siri AI update to manage contextual transitions and smart home tasks. When paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, the HomePod mini 2 recognises up to six distinct voices.

Like the new Apple HomeView, the system can extract recipes from emails or set calendar reminders directly through voice commands.

For smart home management, the device operates as a central hub (without a screen). It executes commands to lock doors or adjust thermostats via the Home app. It also incorporates Sound Recognition technology to detect smoke or carbon monoxide alarms, instantly pushing notifications to connected Apple devices. It seems designed to work in tandem with a central HomeView display in the kitchen, and these are scattered throughout the house in areas where you would listen to sound while seated.

Is It Time to Upgrade?

The HomeView has stolen the show, but those considering a move from the first-generation HomePod mini will see an immediate advantage with Siri AI, and also the introduction of four-speaker surround sound that provides a genuine utility boost for users wanting to invest in the Apple TV 4K ecosystem.

Buyers primarily using the device for basic audio playback may find the original model sufficient. However, the physical footprint remains manageable for daily use, and the addition of Sound Glow and local AI processing positions the HomePod mini 2 as a premium, privacy-focused alternative to other smart home hubs.

Buyers can select from five hardware finishes at launch: pink, green, blue, white, and midnight.

The device relies on an upcoming software update to enable Siri AI functionality. It requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad running the latest software to access all features.
