The 2025 Tesla Model Y (from AUD$58,900 plus on-road costs) has been revealed. It’s brought a Cybertruck-like design with the largest light bar in the industry (1.6 metres), and a new interior that takes inspiration from the new Tesla Model 3 we reviewed last year. Tesla has also made significant changes to key aspects of the driving experience, including revised handling, aerodynamics, and ride comfort. Rather hilariously, they’ve even added a new “precision-engineered indicator stalk” in light of customer feedback from the indicator-less Model 3.

While it’s tough to distance yourself from the company’s CEO, Elon Musk, the Tesla Model Y is Australia’s best-selling EV. With the changes made to this new model, it looks to hold onto the crown for at least another 12 months despite increasing competition. Now, let’s look at the new 2025 Model Y.

What Does the 2025 Tesla Model Y Cost?

The new Tesla Model Y is priced from AUD$58,900 plus on-road costs (approx. $66,800 drive away) for the entry rear-wheel drive model. Meanwhile, the top-of-the-range Long Range All-Wheel Drive model is priced from $68,900 plus on-road costs (approx. $77,300 drive away). Here’s a quick breakdown of what you get for your money:

  • 2025 Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (from AUD$58,900 plus on-roads):
    • Range: 466km (WLTP)
    • Top speed: 201km/h
    • Acceleration (0-100km/h): 5.9 seconds
  • 2025 Tesla Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive (from AUD$66,800 plus on-roads):
    • Range: 551km (WLTP)
    • Top speed: 201km/h
    • Acceleration (0-100km/h): 4.8 seconds

Colour options are shared across both models, and all paints other than white come at an extra cost:

  • Pearl White Multi-Coat
  • Glacier Blue (AUD$2,300)
  • Stealth Grey (AUD$2,300)
  • Quicksilver (AUD$2,600)
  • Ultrared (AUD$2,600)

These colours are shared with the sedan, except for the new Glacier Blue paint option that is exclusive to the Y and looks familiar to the popular Arctic Blue paint colour found on the BYD Seal. When it was originally released back in January there was a “Launch Series,” model that came standard with 20-inch Helix 2.0 wheels, but they’re now an optional extra priced at AUD$2,400. Inside, there’s a choice of black (standard) and white ($1,500) interior colours.

Finally, there is a choice of Autopilot Packages:

  • Enhanced Autopilot (AUD$10,100)
  • Full Self-Driving Capability (AUD$5,100)

What Does the Tesla Model Y Compete With?

There has never been a tougher market for the Tesla Model Y than now. With more than 12 Chinese brands entering the Australian market, there’s a plethora of options to choose from if you don’t want to drive a Tesla.

Here’s a list of the best alternatives to the new Model Y:

  • BYD Sealion 7 – from AUD$54,990 plus on-road costs
  • Deepal S07 – from AUD$53,900 plus on-road costs
  • Cupra Tavascan – from AUD$60,990 plus on-road costs
  • Kia EV5 – from AUD$56,770 plus on-road costs
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 – from AUD$69,800 plus on-road costs
  • Volkswagen ID.4 – from AUD$59,990 plus on-road costs
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E – from AUD$64,990 plus on-road costs

What’s the New Tesla Model Y Like on the Inside?

There are serious changes inside the new Model Y that mimic most of those found in the new Model 3, including ambient lighting, front-seat ventilation, and a rear 8-inch second-row display. However, Tesla has added customisable steering wheel switches and a precision-engineered indicator stalk.

The good news for Uber riders (of which there will be millions) is that the rear seats have longer cushions with an optimised headrest design. More importantly, the flat-fold rear seats now feature electric recline adjustment so you can set the angle for maximum comfort and Tesla’s Airwave 2.0 ventilation system. These are typically features you’ll only find on high-end luxury SUVs from European brands.

Rounding out the interior is an upgraded version of the brand’s Premium Audio system with the 16-speaker sound system (with subwoofer) available exclusively on the Long Range All-Wheel Drive model. The standard Rear-Wheel Drive model also gains the enhanced the mid-range door speakers.

How Does the New Tesla Model Y Drive?

Our driving impressions will have to be reserved until we get behind the wheel. However, if the improvements to the new Model 3 are anything to go by, this new Model Y is shaping up to be an impressive vehicle. Tesla has shared some statistical information to back up the various changes they’ve made to the ride and handling of the new Model Y, including:

  • 51% improvement in the ability to absorb bumps on rough roads
  • 22% reduction in road noise
  • 20% reduction in impact noise
  • 20% reduction in wind noise

The all-new 19-inch Crossflow wheels and 20-inch Helix 2.0 wheels are said to be the most efficient designs yet, and help the New Model Y set the record for the lowest level of brake drag achieved amongst all Tesla vehicles for an estimated 5% range increase with the same battery energy.
