When the New Balance 990 first hit the scene in 1982, it promptly disrupted the running space. And five generations later – with a sixth rumoured to be on the way – it’s returned to the limelight in a big way.
You can give as much credit to the likes of Emily Oberg and Marie von Behrens-Felipe as much as you should give it to your dad. After all, he’s the one who popularised the model back in the day and they’re often termed ‘dad shoes’ for a reason. Retro-cool is back, and while the 990v5 is without a doubt one of the best shoes for every daywear, sneakerheads have longed for the return of the 990v3.
With models coming left and right from all our favourite collaborators, Levi’s joins Bodega and Joe Fresh Goods as the first cabs off the rank for the triumphant return of the 990v3. Successfully setting the precedent that this silhouette isn’t to be messed with. Full of retro-cool allure and comfort, it’s no wonder you’ll find the 990v3 at the top of most peoples top-10.
Whether you live in your Levi’s 501 denim jeans, or you step out in style with New Balance, this collaboration channels the loyalists of both brands. The model will be available in two colourways, Indigo and Grey, as a nod to each brand’s signature tones. Details are hidden throughout, with co-branded N-logos and a custom-designed Levi’s tab. A custom insole rounds out the interior with the phrase “Levi’s for feet” to remind you every time you throw these on.
Materials are where the sneaker shines, accented with Levi’s proprietary Shrink-To-Fit denim and Hairy Suede that’s inspired by the fuzzy back of the iconic Levi’s leather back patch. We’ve seen hairy suede hit the likes of the “Protection Pack” 2002R, and it’s a welcome return for Levi’s 990v3. The colour blocking on the blue is awesome and contrasting cream hits on the laces and midsole complement the Mallard blue upper. However, our personal pick of the bunch is the grey for its versatility and classic retro look.
