South African Film Festival Kicks Off in Australia

Get ready to experience the very best of South African films as the South African Film Festival returns in 2023 all across Australia. This not-for-profit event is organised by a group of passionate volunteers who are dedicated to showcasing the diverse talent and culture of South Africa while supporting educational opportunities for disadvantaged children.

After the successful inaugural festival in 2019 held in cinema at Bondi Junction, the festival went online Australia-wide in May 2020 due to the pandemic, offering an on-demand program. In 2021, the festival expanded with a hybrid program featuring in-cinema and online screenings, and was rebranded as the South African Film Festival, committed to bringing South African cinema to the whole of Australia and extending internationally to include New Zealand.

What’s more, the South African Film Festival is a festival with a conscience. The net proceeds from the festival go towards supporting Education without Borders (EwB), a charitable organisation established in 2002 that provides educational opportunities for disadvantaged young people in South Africa. Kicking off yesterday, get ready to be immersed in the rich culture, history, and politics of South Africa through the power of film.

Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation’s Gold Dinner 2023 Makes History

The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation (SCHF) smashed the global record for children’s hospital charity galas, raising a whopping $19.2 million in one night for children with complex medical conditions. The 2023 Gold Dinner, presented by Scape, broke the 26-year record with the largest single pledge in the history of the event, a $5 million donation made by the family of Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting. The total amount raised by Gold Dinner over the last 26 years for sick children in urgent need of care is now almost $60 million.

Over 400 of Australia’s leading philanthropists and VIPs gathered at the iconic Sydney Town Hall to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital at Westmead Kids Complex Care Centre, to be known as the Kookaburra Centre. The centre would provide life-long comprehensive care and intensive support for children with complex, rare medical conditions, combining a multidisciplinary model of care with state-of-the-art infrastructure. The event featured a modern twist on ‘The Wizard of Oz’ with a Gold carpet reminiscent of the iconic “yellow brick road” and was hosted by sports presenter Tara Rushton, TV host Cooper Cronk, and a list of celebrities.

Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation CEO, Kristina Keneally, thanked the committee and all attendees for their contributions, enabling the SCHF to push the boundaries of pediatric healthcare today and safeguard the health of future generations.
