Sometimes projects have a way of getting away from you and taking on a life of their own. That’s what happened whtn Andy Kilcoyne, Kelly-Moss Director of Operations, found a grey market 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera. The car was supposed to be a quick flip with maybe a few personal touches, but that soon changed. “It didn’t take much convincing for me to give this Carrera the Safari treatment,” says Kilcoyne. “If you’ve ever driven one, you’d understand why.”
The Kelly-Moss team stared with a Rally suspension, additional lights, and wheels and tires. Then ideas started flying around and getting implemented. The next 10 months saw every piece of the car being taken off and apart and then being either repaired or replaced, and in some instances completely reimagined. The bumper extensions were deleted and the front bumper and lower valance were added. The wheel wells were enlarged to make room for larger tires. The larger tires also required that the front inner wheel well opening be opened up five inches more to make room for the steering lock and side to side clearance. A cage and a custom roof rack were added. There was plenty of metal work done—so much so that it’s pretty much just the roof that isn’t metal anymore. LED bar lights were added to the front bumper, the mounted roof bar, and the rear light bar. Six piston Brembo brakes were added to the front with four piston brakes in the back. The engine is a KMR built 3.4L with Jenvey electronic fuel injection and custom ground camshafts for lower end torque. The engine puts out 340 horsepower, which has this Safari Porsche ripping through sand dunes with ease thanks to the BRM built 915 Gearbox. In the interior, the dash was smoothed out and Recaro leather seats were added. A MoTeC C127 digital dash display with a back up camera was installed, and the sound system was revamped as well.
When projects do get out of hand, it can sometimes get messy. But then other times, everything falls into place and you get more than what you set out for. With the 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Safari edition, you definitely get the latter.
