VW Teases ID.2all Concept, Affordable Electric Hatchback for the Masses

Volkswagen is betting big on electric vehicles and its next gamble is the much talked about ‘affordable EV’ placed below the ID.3. Currently called the Volkswagen ID.2all concept, this previews a production version due in 2025 and one that could change the EV spectrum with its disruptive packaging. The ID.2 is likely to be priced below $40,000 with a range of 450kms thanks to a 56kWh battery pack.

To attain economies of scale and to meet the packaging demands, the ID.2all is the first Volkswagen with a front-wheel drive layout on the brand’s MEB architecture. Unlike platform-shared partners such as the CUPRA Born, the ID.2all won’t be rear-drive with a single motor or get a dual-motor all-wheel drive application. Instead, the production version would be front-wheel drive and come with a single electric motor. Power would be plenty for a small electric hatchback as Volkswagen says the power output would be in the region of 226PS.

In terms of design, it’s a mashup of typical Volkswagen design cues mixed with a bit of retro styling, specifically, a c-pillar design paying homage to the first Golf. Like all EVs, it carries a clutter-free design with muscular wheel arches, large wheels, and a prominent face.

Inside, the cabin is cost-effective and minimalist, with a massive 12.9-inch central display and a 10.9-inch digital instrument cluster. Volkswagen has also listened to feedback and incorporated some physical controls including a volume knob and controls for climate control.

The production version of the ID.2all is just the start as Volkswagen plans to continue its electric offensive with as many as 10 new EVs planned till 2026. In fact, this year itself will see the introduction of the new ID.3, the ID. Buzz with a long wheelbase and the ID.7 while a compact electric SUV comes in 2026.

Volkswagen has also announced that it is working on an even more affordable EV outside the ID.2 with aspirations to tap newer markets.
