Before the new generation Volkswagen Tiguan touches down in Australian dealerships, we have the prices and specifications of this RAV4 rival from Germany. The brand-new Tiguan will start from AUD$44,990 plus on-road costs for the entry-level 110TSI Life variant, while the current flagship Tiguan 195TSI R-Line is nearly double that at AUD$70,490 plus on-roads.
One of the most popular models Volkswagen Group Australia sells, the new Tiguan looks bigger and has a more aggressive front-end design flanked by slimmer headlamps with a sportier shape overall.
The Australian market will have no less than three powertrain choices, with all of them being non-hybrid turbo petrol’s as the brand readies the new models as part of the current product onslaught that intends to help VW regain the popularity of its key products. “The all-new Tiguan is emblematic of Volkswagen’s positioning as an elevated mainstream brand,” said Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles Head of Product, Arjun Nidigallu. “The all-new cabin feels like a mini Touareg, with premium materials and cutting-edge design. The significant uplift in standard features, safety and infotainment technology is delivered at extremely competitive prices.”

Starting with the aforementioned entry-level 110TSI Life varient, it’s a 1.4-litre turbo unit with 110kW of power and a starting price of $44,990 plus on-roads, which makes this Life trim quite well equipped with features like 19-inch alloy wheels, keyless access with alarm, power tailgate, 360-degree camera, Digital Cockpit Pro (widescreen driver display), a 12.9-inch infotainment system with satellite navigation, wireless App-Connect and wireless charging.
You also get the Travel Assist suite of semi-autonomous features and Park Assist Plus (with semi-autonomous steering and throttle/braking to park), along with 9 airbags (including centre airbag).

Meanwhile, the 110TSI Elegance version retails at AUD$50,690 plus on-roads, which brings in additional equipment like chrome roof rails and trim, rear privacy glass, LED Plus headlights with illuminated grille strip, LED tail-lights with illuminated centre strip, leather-appointed seat upholstery, plus front comfort sport seats with power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage function.
Optional on this trim is a Head-up Display and Harman Kardon audio system for $2,700 and a panoramic sunroof for an additional $2,100.




Those who wish for more power should opt for the 150TSI R-Line variant, which is cheaper than the outgoing mid-range model. With a starting price of AUD$55,990 plus on-roads, it’s $4,600 cheaper than the outgoing 162TSI R-Line variant. There is more power and a sportier stance since the 2.0-litre TSI powertrain develops 204HP and a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.1 seconds.
Highlights here include the R-Line body kit with 19-inch alloys, LED Plus headlights, LED tail-lights with 3D animation, sports seats with integrated headrest and sports cloth upholstery, DCC Pro, progressive steering, plus an optional panoramic sunroof and optional Sound & Vision package.
However, if you think this is a bit too much for a family SUV then there is the 150TSI Elegance model at $60,690 which has the Sound & Vision package, HD Matrix LED headlights with Adaptive High-beam, LED Plus rear tail-lights with dynamic indicators, a 15.0-inch Discover Pro Max infotainment display with Navigation and adaptive chassis control (DCC Pro).

Finally, the most powerful iteration of the Tiguan R-Line packs in the same 2.0-litre TSI but with more power at 261bhp and 400Nm, while the 0-100 km/h time is further down to 5.9 seconds.
It boasts much of the same equipment from the 150TSI R-Line, however, there are some key attributes which distinguish it as the fastest Tiguan around including even bigger 20-inch ‘Leeds’ alloy wheels, leather upholstery, front comfort sport seats electrically adjustable with memory, heating, ventilation and massage, heated steering wheel, a 15-inch Discover Pro Max infotainment system with Navigation, head-up display, HD Matrix LED headlights with dynamic light assist, LED tail lights with dynamic indicators and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.
Buyers can further pile on a $1,500-optional Black Style package, which adds darkened styling elements with more gloss black trim plus different 20-inch ‘York’ alloy wheels.

While the new generation Tiguan is priced similarly to the previous generation model, it’s a much better-equipped car and is also more spacious, while being a better value for money proposition now.
