Per Variety, Scorsese met with Pope Francis, following which he shared his plans to make a film about Jesus. Scorsese has never shied away from acknowledging the profound influence of faith on his personal and professional spheres. In fact, his upcoming project is a direct response to Pope Francis’ call to artists.
“I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus,” Scorsese declared during a Rome conference at the Vatican. “And I’m about to start making it,” the director added, hinting that this could very well shape up to be his next project. However, nothing has been officially announced as of yet.
Just before the highly anticipated conference, named The Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination, Scorsese, joined by his equally remarkable wife Helen, had a private audience with His Holiness himself. It turns out that their conversation was packed with shared film references and captivating anecdotes. But what truly struck a chord with Scorsese was the Pope’s heartfelt plea to “let us see Jesus.”

Variety reports that Antonio Spadaro, the editor of the periodical that organised the conference, spilled the beans on the extraordinary exchange between the Pope and the esteemed director. It turns out that their conversation was packed with shared film references and captivating anecdotes. But what truly struck a chord with Scorsese was the Pope’s heartfelt plea to “let us see Jesus.”
Scorsese and his unyielding fixation with religion and cinema aren’t new. Time and time again, he has explored this intricate relationship with his groundbreaking works such as The Last Temptation of Christ in 1988, Kundun which delves into the extraordinary life of the Dalai Lama in 1997 or 2016’s Silence, which shed light on Jesuit Christians in the 17th century.
Now, with his sights set on a Jesus movie, Scorsese looks ready to embark on a whole new spiritual journey. But what does he have in store for his Jesus film? That’s something only time will tell.
