Northern Ireland’s weather can be unforgiving, so the golfers that participated in the 2019 Open Championship had to be ready for just about anything. Nike teamed up with Stone Island to meet those needs with a special golf jacket.
“Knowing that the conditions during the tournament can change quickly, and can be quite challenging, we wanted to focus on outerwear,” stated Kelly Tweeden, VP and Creative Director of Nike Golf, Nike Tennis, and Nike Skateboarding. “As experts in creating product that performs as well as it looks, Stone Island was a natural partner in finding the best solutions.”
Part of that solution was coming up with a fabric innovation that was both performance-ready and stylish. The material used in the jacket starts with a military specification cotton satin out face that has a breathable yet weather-resistant membrane. The adaptive fibres keep the wearer from feeling stuffy while also keeping warmth in.
The athletes at the tournament were duly impressed. Rory McIlroy shared before the tournament that “the Nike X Stone Island collaboration is a perfect combination of style and performance. As an athlete, it’s important that my apparel con comfortably handle the conditions of any course at any time. This collection will allow me to be prepared for the unpredictable climate of Northern Ireland but also sport a look that appeals to my personal style.”
That kind of reaction is exactly what Stone Island was looking for. Carlo Rivetti, Creative Director and Chairman of Stone Island said, “Golf particularly fascinates me, because it is a precision game in which concentration and power play a fundamental role in athletic gesture and on performance. Working on garments with Nike Golf gave us the opportunity to create true technical and performing pieces.”
The Nike X Stone Island jacket debuted during the tournament in Northern Ireland, and is now available to the public in two colourways—grey and blue. You can also pick up the crew neck, which comes in grey, blue, and yellow.
