Joseph Junior Adenuga Jr. is better known as Skepta—a British grime MC, rapper, songwriter, record producer, and music video director. Hailing from Tottenham, North London, this artist’s partnership with Nike has given him a chance to share his story with special pairs of SK SHOX trainers.
“I take pride in the fact that I know my surname, and I know where I’m from and both my parents are Nigerian,” says Skepta. That heritage gave Skepta the opportunity to be granted a chieftainship in his parents’ home state of Ogun, Nigeria, in 2018. Those chieftainships are awarded to people in recognition for their efforts to positively contribute to the community’s wellbeing. “It made me realize that anybody could be a chief, but some people are brought up not thinking they can,” explains Skepta. He continues, saying, “It is important to make people believe that they can feel royal—that if they work hard, their work will be recognized and appreciated and celebrated.”
The shoes features a black base upper with jet black accents. At the midfoot and on the tongue you’ll find chrome Swooshes. The sole is a red, full-foot piston cushioning system. The shoes are a trip down memory lane for Skepta. “When I used to go to Manchester, all the kids were rocking SHOX. It was a real street shoe there. I liked their swag—the windbreakers and the SHOX. I thought, ‘Yeah, let’s definitely do that,’ because I always remember those trips up north.”
This partnership with Nike was a way for Skepta to help people, especially kids, to feel that their dreams are within reach. “It was about bringing Nike to Nigeria and letting the kids know the energy.” The shoes, in effect, became a way for Skepta to share his vision of a future without limits. The SHOXs dropped on September 12 in select retailers as well as on SNEAKRS in Europe and SNKRS in Asia and Greater China.
