It was five decades ago that Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon, as part of the Apollo 11 spaceflight. History was made that day, to say the least. Back on Earth, Omega Watches presented a limited edition Speedmaster to honour the game-changing event. On the mission’s 50th anniversary, Omega’s classic watch returns in the form of the Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Limited Edition.
Visually, Omega’s new watch bears a purposeful resemblance to its distinguished predecessor. If you look a little closer, however, you’ll notice a bevy of modern touch-ups. For example, Omega has swapped out the original’s 42mm case of 18k yellow gold with a 42mm case of “Moonshine Gold,” i.e. an 18k gold alloy that’s exclusive to the brand. Meanwhile, the watch’s minimalist dial is made of solid gold, with gold and black markers.
Flip the timepiece over to see its manual-winding Master Chronometer calibre-3861 movement in action through a caseback window. The extraordinary movement brims with gold elements and comes flanked by commemorative text. Also featured on the perimeter are an etching of the Americas and a domed lunar meteorite engraving of the moon. It all makes for a truly memorable watch. As with the original, this one is limited to just 1,014 units.
