‘First Electric Shelby’: 2023 Shelby Mustang Mach-E GT Revealed

When you think of Shelby, you instantly have visions of tyre smoke set to a blistering V8 soundtrack that screams ‘AMERICA’, but the car manufacturer‘s latest effort strays from the norm a bit. The 2023 Shelby Mach-E GT is the badge’s first production EV, arriving with a myriad of upgrades designed to keep the petrol-powered purists in check. Not that it really matters. This limited-edition, seemingly American icon won’t even make an appearance on US soil. What a tragedy.

Only built for European markets, the Shelby Mach-E GT has been completely overhauled, copping a range of new dynamics that involved rigorous testing on the track to hone the car’s suspension. Hence, the Shelby team has lowered the SUV by an inch, cut weight off the top, and reduced rotating mass to enhance stability.
Based on the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT, the Shelby package modifies the electric all-wheel drive, adds a BORLA Active Performance sound system, while the Ford 480hp electric powertrain remains untouched. In a stellar move, Shelby’s first electric production vehicle will also receive an engineered soundtrack replicating that of a combustion-engined car.

Styling wise, the Shelby Mach-E GT does look lower, meaner and has a wider track with its various design upgrades. The folks at Shelby have added carbon fibre pretty much everywhere, including the grille, hood, front splitter and even the mirror caps. Forged aluminium wheels, custom vinyl striping, Shelby floor mats and a serialised CSM dash plaque round out the changes.
For its maiden foray into the world of EVs, Shelby is using this car to honour the 100th birth anniversary of its founder Caroll Shelby. Only 100 of the packages will be offered in Europe for the Carroll Shelby Centennial. That being said, these kits would be available to be retrofitted on privately owned 2021-2023 model year Mustang Mach-E GT SUVs or can be added to a new vehicle by a Shelby American dealer in select European countries within the 2023 calendar year. The package MSRP starts at €24,900, not including the base vehicle.
